Gimmicks, in what they mean, are not bad.
A gimmick by definition is:
"a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business"
Its what the gimmick is determines whether or not it is positively or negatively received.
Fox's shine? A gimmick.
Why? Because its something meant to be a staple of that character, thats their niche, something they have that no one else has. But, because its so useful and has its ups and downs and isn't easy to use but amazing once mastered, its seen as an amazing tool in Fox's arsenal. Its something meant to distinguish what Fox is.
Tripping in Brawl? A gimmick
Same case with Fox, its meant to distinguish what Brawl was a pile of **** but because it was so poorly receive because it was just garbage. So it was labeled a bad gimmick. And I think ever since then any bad gimmick was just labeled a gimmick.
But back to it in character design, Fox's gimmick is that his shine is ****ing amazing and its his bread and butter. But it can't be **** spammed to the point where you can just spam shines. If you only know how to shine, you're gunna get your **** kicked in because you dont know what to do other then use the same strategy over and over. And sure, it'll work a few times, maybe even get a few wins with it. But people catch onto your **** real quick. That's why mixups are so important.
Now jumped to Smash 4.
The Rage Effect is a gimmick. That is not inherently bad. But because the player themselves don't have to do anything to gain from it, other then take damage. So it was seen as being rewarded for being bad. Therefor, it was a bad gimmick.
Little Mac's gimmick, he's amazing on the ground (one of the best in the game) but is **** in the air (the worst air game)
This is not a bad gimmick, because, as with Fox's shine it has its ups and downs, but if you know how to adapt to it and use it effectively, without it being exploitative.
So moral of the story: gimmicks themselves aren't bad. Everything has them. Melee has them, 64 has them, Smash 4 has them. All smash games have gimmicks. Melee just has really good gimmicks while Brawl and Smash 4 have worse ones. (Smash 4 to a lesser extent)
So the next time someone exploits a character trait, dont call the character gimmicky, say the character has some **** gimmicks. And the guy playing him needs to stop being such an asshole.
If you guys have already read this somewhere else, cool. If you ****ing hate this because I called shine a gimmick, calm down.
If you guys have anything to add, go ahead.
:^)
