Hello everyone, I hope you have been enjoying the new Smash!
I know many players are going to be trying to become the very best Smashers, so I thought this would be a good time to bring up HOW to become a good Smash players. Here's how I think you should:

Materials Needed: A Wii U or 3DS, The game, and a controller. ( Wii U only)
If you are stressed about your controller don't worry about it because the GC Adapter is NOT widely found anywhere unless it is OUTRAGEOUSLY priced. So, I would say settle for a Wii U Pro Controller. (My current choice)

Smash Bros. is very easy to pick up and play, but hard to master. I would say start with learning all of the terms that are used often (Nair, Fair) and learn to air dodge, throw, combo, shield, and dodge. Then I would practice LOTS. If you can get a nice streak of wins in For Glory, I think you have done nice. If anyone else has things to add on, feel free to. :ness:
EDIT: Thank you for all replying, I think this board should help out some younger players! I would watch M2K stream the game on Twitch if you would like someone REALLY good to show some skills off online.

Play a lot, and observe trends in character choices, move choices, and so on. Figure out what works, what doesn't, and adapt your playstyle based on that knowledge.

It's very helpful to watch tournaments on Twitch or Youtube. Not only can you watch high-level players and learn from them, but the commentary often contains many helpful tips too.

this i what i do:
*Assuming you already have your main(s):

0.- Play with your main until you are able to beat consistently CPU lvl9 (this will only be a measurement of your reflexes and how well you are used to the overall gameplay of your main, or this smash game in particular). Beating a CPU lvl9 does not mean that you are good, but its a start.

1.- Go to training and do an analysis of ALL the moves.
1.1.- Be conscious about the startup time, ending lag, duration and hitbox duration of all the moves (not the exact frame data, but should be able to tell effortless which moves comes faster, which is safer and which is easier to hit with in many situations: in air, follow ups, when landing, on ground, after a roll/dodge, etc...)
1.2.- Be conscious about which are the your kill moves (in order, and in which situations), probably even categorize them (on air, on ground, offstage, "combo finishers", etc..)
1.3.- Analyze and try every crazy possibility after a throw, at different percentages. Better if you try it with characters with different weights Bowser, Fox, Mario, etc... Be conscious what are your follow ups of a throw at different percents.

2.- Practice and memorize all the possible combos (even if they are not true combos)

3.- Keep an organized document with all the important info about the game and/or your mains. That way it will be easier and faster to acces/study info in the future.

4.- If you have a friend(s) better than you, play against him/them. If not (or even if you do), "for glory" is also good because in there you can see different play styles for different characters (try to get a LAN adapter, so you experience less lag. If the lag is too much because of the other person, exit the match).

5.- Avoid being sad of frustrated when you cant beat a player, or when you have a bad streak. Thats normal not only in smash, but in every aspect of life. There is plenty of time to get better, and to overcome bad results. There will always be a new opportunity to get what/where you want.

6.- Save ALL the replays that you lose to analyze them: Which were your errors? could you have punished something that you didnt? Did you always fell for the same traps? Were you always punished after the same move attemps? Did you became too predictable? How can you change that?. NOTE: Dont let go by more than 2-3 days without analyzing them. Otherwise they will stack up and it will be hard to keep track. Once analyzed, only keep the most important ones (if any). Take notes on your document if necessary so you can remember what to do.

7.- Search for video tutorials of your mains. Watch them carefully, and make sure you are able to execute everything they do in the tutorial.

8.- Use the character forum to search for more info, techs, and players. If possible, contact and play against good players who also main your character.

9.- Watch tournament videos, specially from top players, and if a top player use the same character as you do, analyze all his videos (even in 1/4 speed if necessary)

10.- Play more and have fun.

11.- Practice and master ONE Advanced technique per week (by master i mean you can easily apply it in a real match)

12.- Analyze and practice with one different character per week (even if you dont like it). For being good you need to have as much knowledge as possible of your opponent and the Matchup (start with the most popular ones, or the ones considered "top/high" tiers)

13.- Participate in tournaments (both local and online).

14.- Practice and study different stages (unless you never plan to attend tournaments): Which are the most favorable for your character and playstyle? Memorize how to avoid and/or take advantage of any possible hazard or obstacle, memorize when the stage changes/transform, etc...

15.-Repeat from step #1 until (insert your goal/limit here)
