So I'm coming from Smash 4. My first game was Brawl, and after watching Apexes 2014-15, I'm ready to jump into competitive Melee. Problem is, my mains, :kirbymelee: and :nessmelee:, are hard to play proficiently in this game. So I'm trying to find a new main.

I'm practicing against CPUs and my brother right now, and the characters I win most with are:

:foxmelee:: He's pretty easy to get the hang of. I've got his speed under control and everything, I just don't feel as interested in playing him.
:sheikmelee:: Pretty much same as Fox.
:marthmelee:: For Marth, I can't recover very easily. I also need to practice combos.
:jigglypuffmelee:: I don't win as much using her, but I like the character, due to similarities with Kirby.
:peachmelee:: I can control her pretty easily. I just need to learn how to use her turnips and I'm pretty much set.
:yoshimelee:: Surprisingly, I do extremely well with him. I don't think I can use him that well in high-level play yet, though.

Hopefully, this thread's comments will lead me to the correct character board(s). Feedback would be appreciated.

Pick yoshi then and watch a lot of amsa games. Or try Falcon. I feel like as good as he was when competition first started kicking off, he's fallen behind because he is really difficult to master/understand. But if you like to get in your opponent's head, get those read/hard reads, give him a go! I think he is the most fun. I main him in the others, and in sm4sh he is actually pretty fun, but gawd damm if he isn't a blast to win with in melee. On another note, if you just want to win, pick Fox or marth. It's a bonus if you have fun with them, but I don't.

Since you used to play Kirby, I think Jigglypuff might be a good starting point. Jiggly will teach you some decent aerial spacing and help you develop an idea of when you should be offensive or defensive. Peach is a good idea too, albeit has a bit more tech due to floating and turnips.

Anyone who has ever been the best in the last 8 years has a very strong fox, falco, or puff. Armada WAS the excpetion with peach, then he let everyone down and showed how much better his fox was. So yoshi and peach might be fun, and although you will probably never ever be the best player, you are definitely putting the nail on the coffin by not choosing one of them. And if you are to choose marth or sheik, you need a strong secondary, perhaps as equally strong as your main.

This is assuming you at least want an inkling of chance of becoming the best (which I think is important and everyone should at least have a little bit of that deep down).

ultimately, you should play a character that you find interesting and fun. At the end of the day melee is a game and should be enjoyed. Of course you want to do well but i know many smashers who think that if you're determined enough any character can become a force to be reckoned with. Amsa, Axe, and Armada come to mind. But whatever man, you have time. go to tourneys and get some feedback on how you have played. Mess around with all the characters and see what fits. I've always bounced around from main to main. i suggest a diverse character to start, so you can grasp the game and get used to the higher use of tech skill in melee. Goodluck bud

Peach has the floaty game of kirby and the projectile game of ness. Also, considering how your description of your experience with her seemed the most positive when compared to your other descriptions, i would pick her.

Just because Armada has been playing more fox doesn't mean that peach is bad. She's top 8 for a reason, and she has a lot of cool tools at her disposal (double jump cancelling, turnips, float, etc).
