Getting into Mega Man

I haven't had much experience with Mega Man. First of all, I didn't grow up during his glory days so I really can't say I have fond memories of his games. It's a really, really long story but even though I'm part of the Xbox generation I did grow up playing a lot of older games (my first system was a Genesis, among other things) so I kind of see gaming differently than most my age. Recently, I've rediscovered 2D gaming (thanks so a spontaneous urge to play Golden Axe again) and have started to demo older titles on emulators, which I plan to download from the Virtual Console in the future (seriously, I'd rather not have to even touch an emulator but because you really can't demo them any other way...).

Now, while flipping through SNES/Genesis games I found a game call Mega Man X for the SNES. To be honest, all I knew about Mega Man at that point in time was that he was apparently as popular as Master Chief is these days back when he first came out, he's also known as the Blue Bomber and that his games involved you shooting stuff, killing bosses and taking their powers. And the games were also apparently very, very hard. Prior to this, the only other Mega Man games I had played were Mega Man 7 (briefly), Mega Man 64 (which I just plain-off did not like) and one of the Battle Network games which I played for about ten minuets at a Walmart once. I didn't know what exactly to expect from Mega Man X, but after playing it for a while I found myself really enjoying it.

Long story short, I've developed an interest in Mega Man (and Castlevania looks kind of interesting too...) and would like to get into the series, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I enjoyed X, but I don't know what else there is to Mega Man. So if we have any Mega Man fans present, please give me some tips and point me in the right direction.

I'd say if you're just starting, I'd recommend Mega Man 2 on Normal Diffuculty. Just go on from there, but skip 5, since it's really not that special, and I can kinda-sorta recommend 6. 7 and 8 are good, but not great. 9 is really good, but it has some pretty FUBARed difficulty balance.

As far as X goes, play X1-3 lovingly, approach X4-5 with an open mind, avoid X6-7 like the plague, and 8....eh.

If you can afford a trip to gamespot's bargain bin, I HIGHLY suggest you buy Mega Man Anniversary collection and Mega Man X collection. You'll be getting MM 1-8 and X1-6 plus bonus games, for about 20$ tops alltogether.

This. Not even joking, he hit the nail on the head. I'll just repeat: buy the collections. They are a great value and you're getting some amazing games.

MM9 is also a great buy, and look forward to MM10 in the future.
