Getting emulation to feel "right."

Ok, so I've got Project64k working pretty well now (finally) but I still can't seem to get it to feel "right." Any tips on settings to tweak or drivers to try to get it as close to 64 gameplay as possible? Also, anyone care to recommend a n64 to usb converter? I'm using a 360 controller at the moment, which is actually a lot better than I thought it would be, but I'd still like to switch to the 64 controller.

Also, are there any servers out there for smash games using the mupen client instead of project64k (mupen seems to run better on my system for some reason, but no one uses it :/) so far I've pretty much only been playing on 69.90.34.14.

EGX is about the only North American server your going to find for smash...that plays consistently...and due to peoples inability to change no one will play mupen, at least not many people

Mupen lies!

and as for feeling like the console, try p2p, its probably the best you're going to get

Hmm. I keep seeing p2p suggested, but I honestly have no idea what it is, and of course googling "p2p" results in nothing but torrent sites. Is it a program or a protocol or what?

It's playing through a direct connection to your opponent rather than through a server. It's faster, better, and more people use Mupen for P2P than regular server smash.
Like he said, but I'll continue.

P2P stands for Peer to Peer. It's used for anything that directly connects, rather than the normal server/client structure of Kaillera. P2P is often used for stuff like torrents, but it works for Smash too.

And probably one reason Mupen isn't used so often are the antivirus false alarms. I can't even DL it, and I don't know how to disable my antivirus [exit from system tray fails]. But you can use Project64k P2P too.

To figure out how to set it up, look at the sticky [the one by Meowkitty]. A link is there somewhere. Old P2P is better though, you'd have to ask Surri, me, or Daedatheus for a link to it though.

A lot of people say that the closest to the console is Mupen instead of Project and I'd say I agree.
