What button do most players use to short hop? I tried using x but then had trouble doing instant nairs off of the sh. Also, do people like to switch buttons like R to something else? I set my c stick to attack since I play ryu.

I set R to jump, and C-Stick to tilts. I try to set my buttons to where I at least have the option to have attack and jump on separate fingers.

:GCLT: + :GCRT: = Jump
:GCX: = Shield
:GCY: = Grab

I used this configuration for Brawl, PM, and the 3DS, so I've kinda gotten used to it by now. Not sure if I should do something about the C-Stick, though, but I rarely use it anyways. :ohwell:

Back in mah day, you couldn't do any o' dis fancy garbage you spoiled little kids do! The game shipped from Nintendo with dem default controls and ya couldn't change them!
Okay, now seriously: Since I played 64 and Melee (especially Melee) before the newer games where you can change your controls, I sorta had no choice but to get used to them. Heck: if you go play Melee now you ain't gonna have a choice, either. That's why I always with the default settings on.
In Melee, I have no problem doing a shorthop with :GCY: and then very quickly moving my thumb over to :GCCN: to do an aerial. If you don't wanna have to deal with that, I shorthopping with :GCX: instead and then pressing :GCA: in one swift move of your thumb is probably a good option, too, but it probably won't be long until you skin your finger doing that.

I do L shield, R jump, Z grab, and both and X and Y jump. I also use C-stick for Smash attacks, so I may not be a good source.

Although I do set the C-Stick to tilts and tap-jump to off, I pretty much keep it to default for this very reason.

On the rare occasion that I do play Melee (which has been happening quite a lot lately) knowing I don't have to relearn the controls is beneficial.

Anyways, to answer the question, I think I use the "Y" button

:GCLT: to Jump
:GCCN: to Tilts
Tap jump off

I use :GCY: to SH. Short hopping with the shoulder buttons takes some practice to use mid mach and while I can do it, it doesn't ALWAYS come out as a short hop. The only real reason I have a shoulder button as jump is so that I can perform OOS options easier
