If anybody would be interested in going to a relatively small local tournament for Smash 4, please let me know! My good friends and I are extremely passionate about Smash 4, but we're only able to make it out to tourneys once a month because there are really only monthlies going on around us, so we're looking to start a more local scene, possibly starting weeklies. If you or anybody you know would be interested in going to something like this, please let me know! It would really help us out in starting something up in the DuPage/Will County area. Thanks!

My friend and I love smash 4 and want a competitive tournament in Naperville! We've tried going to gorilla games near fox valley but they take the number of entrants and just split it by two and do a free for all. (If they had 10 people they would do two 5 man ffas) Bottom line is that I'm very interested!

That's awesome! That's for the heads up! We're still looking into getting a venue, but I'll be sure to keep you updated with how it's going! If you know anybody else besides just you and your friend who would be interested in coming, be sure to spread the word!

Awesome! I'll keep you updated as to whether we get some stuff set up. The first few tournaments will probably be smaller, as they tend to bbe, but thanks so much for replying! Also, @ Insiviq Insiviq , please don't advertise your own tournaments in my guaging interest post. Yours are an hour away, and regardless, I'm not looking for already running tournaments, I'm looking to start one. Please, do not do this again.

I know this is a hella late response, but I'd be down down down for any kind of smash tourney around here. I might even be able to help get a venue going. Hit me up here or on twitter if you have one if you wanna chat. A tourney here would be SO hype, and I'll do anything I can to help you out in getting one going.

EDIT: I'm the friend Quantam mentioned, but I just wanted to show my support for this. We've got a few other people we could get to come along with us too, so in all we could probably get 4 or so people of our own we could bring to a tournament.

So, sorry it took longer than expected, but here's the basics. My mother (lol) has access to a bunch of community centers and stuff around here cause she's a fairly important member of a bunch of naperville clubs and stuff like that. I'm not exactly sure on what locations we'd be at, or if we'd be able to stick with the same place for each tourney, but I could almost definitely get us into venues that could accommodate 30+ people EASY.

How would we get TVs and stuff. I assume that most of use would be fine with bringing at least our Wii-U's and a GC adapter but TVs?

I have a wii u, an adapter, the game, but no suitable TV. Oh, and controllers, but only one is in good shape. The others have been worn down with nearly 14 years of use.

Well I might be able to scrounge up a crt TV. We'll see.

I also play PM! I do not, however, have a setup for that. I play on dolphin. This is all pretty exciting though, really hoping we can get a smash scene going around here.

Hey guys. I'm so horribly sorry I've neglected this thread and smash in general, senior year of high school had me super busy haha. I do apologize about that. @ Sjin Sjin are you still able to get venues by chance? A few good friends and myself are still super interested in setting up tournaments, especially with summer fast approaching. We'd be more than happy to include PM and MELEE as well! As for set ups and tvs, we'd definitely be asking attendees to bring both of possible. Set ups would likely be the biggest issue, as id be more than happy to stop at goodwill and grab a couple of CRTs. However, starting with a relatively smaller scene, I don't imagine we'd need all that many honestly. If anyone has info on venues, please feel free to message me on here or contact me on Twitter @flood0f72 and I'll happily try and get things up and running as soon as possible!

Neuqua Valley, and we unfortunately don't. I wish we did! That's why I'm looking to set up some local tournaments around Naperville.

@ Sjin Sjin You there? Its almost May, and everyone is going to be busy during this month i feel like, so lets try and get a venue down please! :D
Yeah, if we get a venue locked down, my friends and I are more than able to get everything else organized, as we're effectively done with school. We'll probably be aiming for an early to mid June first tournament, so the sooner the venue is locked in, the better!

I believe I'm in the same region of Naperville as well. Around the intersection of 59 and Montgomery, if you know where that is.

I live right near Downtown Naperville. Around Chicago and Washington. I'm fine with making a quick drive down to south Napervilel to play some smash!

OKAY. I have some news regarding the venue. If, for the first tourney, it's just gonna be us who are posting in the thread and maybe a couple other people, I'd totally be down with just having it at my house. I can PM anyone my address if you're curious. I've got a basement with plenty of room for at least 6 or 7 set ups, and lots of seating available. I also have an HD projector if we wanna put hype matches up on a bigger screen for spectating.(obviously we wouldn't play on the projector, for lag reasons).

If we wanna get into a different venue, it's gonna cost us a bit. So, we probably wanna build up a bit of a scene here before jumping into somewhere big. I've done a lot of looking, and just about everywhere around here is charging upwards of $60 an hour for about 30 people. If we're there for three hours that's $180, divide that by 30 and you get a venue fee of $6 per person, which really is quite a lot (go figure why we have no scene here right now). I'll keep looking, and post back later tonight if I find anything that's cheaper and can accommodate fewer people, since our first couple tournaments most likely won't have 30 people.

Again, if we're gonna have like 15 or less I'm totally fine with having you all over to my place, and that way we can keep any money we do wanna put into this as prize money.

Also, if anyone cares, I have a setup for smash 64. I don't play, but I just thought it would be a nice thing to point out.

Wow that's some wild rates. The last weekly I was at in Crestwood had about 15 people in it, at a fee of 10 per person. It was hosted by a small game store over there, I'm not sure that they charged anything for hosting it though, because all of the money from the entry fees was paid out to the top three fighters.

What kinds of venues are you looking at? I'd imagine independent gaming stores would charge way less (if at all) for hosting.

I'd be completely fine with having the first couple of tournaments at your house. I too am interested in the venues that you have been looking at. Keep us updated!

Huh, I was looking at park district community centers, as they're pretty easy to reach out to. From what I've found, there aren't many local game stores around anymore. There used to be a play n' trade right by the jewel on 59 and 95th, but it closed a few years back. Was a damn shame too cause they were huge on hosting smash tournaments from what I've heard. I'll keep looking, but if we're all looking to get together any time soon to just hang and play some smash, my place is open most weekends, and we can discuss in person, or keep the convo going here. Nice to see some people who are just as interested in this as I am, though. I really appreciate that all you guys keep coming back here to keep things rolling.

Also, my friend mentioned way above that we went to a tourney a couple months ago at Gorilla games (near fox valley mall) and that it was basically a nightmare. Maybe if we reached out to them we could get them to let us bring a few more setups and host a legit tourney, with 1v1s instead of 8 man ffas. That'd be really cool, as it would cut down a lot of the work for us. And when I was there, I do recall them saying that if they kept getting the same tournout they'd gotten that week (exactly 10 people) they'd start asking the participants to put money into a pot. So I'll definitely give them a call and see if we can work something out with them.

EDIT: would've responded sooner, but I was practicing PM tech skill LOL

Update: Sjin and I have looked for more venues and found that Naper Blvd. Library has a "program room" that can hold up to 50 people which will be large and in the pictures (in the link) it looks as if we can get some tables in there.

Here is a link to the meeting room page: http://www.naperville-lib.org/content/meeting-room-rentals

As far as we can discern with their cryptic rates on the PDF it would cost $80 for a "profit group" and it would cost $40 for a non-profit organizations. As far as I can tell we are just some guys who want a public venue to play some smash bros and nothing is "profit" about that. So I don't see why we shouldn't get the non-profit rate.

Here is a link to the meeting room policy pdf: http://www.naperville-lib.org/sites/default/files/pdf/Policies/policy320.pdf

That being said you never know with these things. Lastly I'd like to point out that on the PDF it talks about appropriate uses of the rooms and nothing that we will be doing there will violate their rules. I'm overall very stoked for this whole thing coming together but Sjin and I will make some calls tomorrow and get exact details and report back here!

The actual last point is of mine is that if we manage to get this venue we should be thankful to the library and adhere to all their rules about how we should conduct ourselves. If we get hype lets yell and that's ok but they do have some rules about the payment and setup etc. I would like to organize it to have everyone get there at least 15 mins early because we would need to set up everything in the room. They book for 3.5 hour slots for the low price and if we are not out by the given time they are allowed to charge us and/or not allow us to return. They require that we set up and take down everything. Obviously if we have food we should be neat and make sure to clean up after ourselves and stuff so that they will allow us to return. Thanks for listening to my rant and as I said I am very hyped so lets get this on a roll!

I just want to point out that we could alternate between the Naper Blvd library and the 95th St library, as the only timeslot on saturdays is from 1pm-4:30pm, so I doubt they'd be okay with us taking those all the time. Gotta share, yknow?

EDIT: Now that I've actually read the process for getting access to these rooms, it seems like a HUGE hassle. You have to register months in advance and they can boot you if anything more important comes up (aka something the library is actually affiliated with). I feel like a lot of stuff would occur in their single saturday timeslot, and we would be unable to use the space very often. Also, the whole process of getting the room requires applications and a ton of other forms to be filled out and stuff like that. At this point, reaching out to a local restaurant would be our best option if we can't find a game store that's interested. Restaurants will host basically anything as long as you throw some money their way and maybe buy some food while you're there.

I like the idea of house hosted tournaments. It's like a throwback to 2002 or something.

Plus, I think all the hype would break noise rules at the library pretty quickly lol

I love the idea of house tournaments! They seem relatively easy to set up, plus it'll be an overall great starting point just to get a more centralized scene. Plus, it's a great place to get together and start discussing ideas for places to get a more "official" tournament started up while playing the game we all love. I should definitely be able to get a good handful of people to come out, anywhere between 8-12, most of who would have no problem bringing set ups for Wii U, and a few who could maybe bring PM set ups. I'll also be able to bring out a TV myself, a few of my friends may be able to bring one as well.

EDIT: In response to the whole "local game stores" idea, my friends and I did try and go to Top Cut Gaming off of 59 in Plainfield, and get in contact with them about hosting tournaments there, but they just flat out ignored our emails, so that was a bust, which especially blows since it's one of the few game stores we have around here. Also @ Sjin Sjin , how many people do you think you'd be able to have at a house tournament? Don't want to bring out more people than you're comfortable with.
