GameStop now stocking classic games

There wasn't really a thread I could post this in, but I thought it was worth posting about.

GameStop is going to start selling old games. Right now it looks like they're stocking SNES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1 and Dreamcast games and consoles. As of writing, it looks like it's online only with only a handful of stores participating but obviously they're hoping to eventually have retro games in all stores.

I feel like this is both good and bad. On one hand, it means that people who live in areas with nothing but GameStop can get their hands on older games if they dislike shopping online. But on the other hand, it means that GameStop is encroaching on the one safe haven that many locally-owned game stores had - the retro market.

Oh well. They list Parasite Eve on their site. Maybe one day I'll see it at GameStop and pick it up on a whim. Then I could finally get around to playing it.

Typically, stores inflate prices on cheap/common games but reduce prices on rare games. Heck, earlier today I got a copy of Contra III for SNES for $40, when those online ask for $50.

You're probably best just looking up whatever private stores are in your area, but Gamestop does seem to be a decent alternative.

I always thought GameStop was a suitable place to buy from. Its selling and trading with them that is questionable. Plus, some prices will be adjusted I think depending upon the store. However, with GameStop they can ship out games between locations, so I guess the idea of having extra copies in stock to deflate the price is not really a thing.

...Those are pretty good prices.
Or at least I think so.
Here in Manhattan, I know 3 stores that sell old and classic games. But they have ridiculous prices. So compared to those stores, Gamestop is selling them for CHEAP.

Then again, I don't know typical ebay prices so idk.

$25 for a copy of Melee?
$15 for Pokemon Stadium on the N64?

I'm boarding this hype train.

Man, I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, it should be convenient in some cases, but on the other hand, I really like supporting the small businesses in my area that sell classic games. I'll probably continue to do so. Especially since I doubt GameStop will do much stocking of complete-in-box classics.

GameStop has some sketchy business practices such as taking the wrapping off of new copies of Xenoblade so that they can sell the "Used" copies at above the suggested retail price.

EDIT: Also, the disappointment is real:

They currently don't stock GBA. AFAIK GameStop's currently accepting "retro", which is 1999 and under, and even then they're skipping a few consoles from that time frame.

PS2 was from 2000 and Xbox is 2001, but they have both of those consoles with games listed online.

EDIT: They also have GCN listed now.

Hot dog, I never thought I see the day where a major retail store would have a 20 year old console and their games in stock.

...Now, what's this about a Dreamcast I've been hearing of? (Don't bother answering, I already know.)

Game Crazy was pretty big and they sold a lot of games back to the Genesis before our branch closed down about 8 years ago (and all but 2 closed down 5 years ago). Their unfortunate downfall was because GameStop (EB Games at the time) has a bigger stock of newer games, as well as a big PC section in addition to the fact that their parent company was a video store (put out of business by Netflix).
