Game: The 30-Character Roster

So let's suppose tomorrow, Sakurai announces that due to the 3DS hardware limitations, there can only be a maximum of 30 characters on the roster.

Starting with Brawl's roster + the newcomers already announced (38 characters,) who do you cut, who do you add?

RULES:
-Assume Brawl is 35 characters.
-Do not count transformations as additional characters.
-You cannot remove any characters already announced to be in the game.
-You must have a minimum of 3 newcomers in addition to the 3 already announced, which means you must cut a minimum of 11 characters.

Example of what mine would be--

Cut: Snake, Wolf, Lucario, Lucas, Ike, Jigglypuff, Pokemon Trainer, Ganondorf, Falco, Ice Climbers, Peach (-11 characters, roster=27)
Add: Mewtwo, Little Mac, Dixie Kong (merge Diddy and Dixie into a team, which won't add a slot,) Sheriff (+4 characters, but 3 slots=30)

Well now, that will be easy to abuse.

Add Pokemon Trainer as a character. His pokemon include squirtle, ivysaur, charizard, jigglypuff, pikachu, mewtwo, pichu and lucario. Since they're all part of one character, they all get to share Pikachu's already confirmed slot.

Give Link a taunt move where he places the Master Sword into a pedestal, transforming him to Young Link. Young Link gets in for free since it's a transformation.

Mario gets a taunt move where he puts on a doctor's coat and transforms into Dr. Mario. Again, for free. Mario gets another taunt where he pulls out a Yoshi egg that immediately hatches. Now Yoshi will fight instead.

Diddy Kong both get in for free as part of Donkey Kong's slot. Diddy will follow Donkey Kong around like in the DKC games, and he can be tagged in/out at any time through a taunt.

Fox gets a taunt to call on his teammate Falco at any time during a fight, allowing Falco to fight instead of Fox.

So there's 12 veterans who get in for free.

Well, I thought I'd have a legitimate stab at this. Simply cut all clones (assuming new moveset for Ganondorf), old 3rd party guys, Ike and Lucario. Put back Mewtwo.

Doesn't look too bad:

I wouldn't be surprised if Smash 4's roster was <40. If there are no clones, I'd be happy with 35 again.

I hate this roster, but I tried my darned best to include as many fan favorites and unique characters as possible:

Newcomers: Villager, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Mewtwo with new form, King K. Rool and Ridley.

Cut: Toon Link, Lucario, Lucas, Ike, Wolf, R.O.B, Ice Climbers, Jigglypuff, Mr. G&W, Snake, Falco

Man, I cut so many great characters... In a situation like this I hate having to replace them with WFT and Villager. I've become very grateful that the roster won't be this limited all of a sudden.

- Must have confirmed chars, so Olimar, Pit, WFT, and Megaman
- Must have all 12 Veterans, so no cutting Kirby and Yoshi

This was brutal. I went in thinking I would just get rid of the clones, and add in all the fan favorites, but I couldn't get in the 4 I want without cutting a veteran like Yoshi.



The hardest ones to cut were the characters like Diddy and Ike who have unique movesets.

In my opinion the game would be better with 30 characters. Less bloat, more diverse and fun gameplay... more love quality over quantity.

With this list I consolidated a few characters that were lacking previously and dropped a few random late-series entries. It puts gameplay first, fan-service second, but still trying to please a wide range of fan desire.
