So I tried out Wifi for the first time yesterday. It was pretty interesting. I went in not quite knowing how the lag was going to effect me. Here's how it went.

Opponent picks ROB. I choose Lucas as usual.

As soon as the match starts, I try to run directly at him. Lucas pauses for about a second and then starts to dash. But before I know what's happened, he's run right past the opponent and fallen off the edge. I quickly try to use PK thunder, but because of the lag it goes waaaaay off to the right and I suicide.

After flailing around a bit, I lost that match horribly trying to get used to the lag (which didn't seem to be effecting my opponent at all.)

Second round. Opponent picks Dedede. I figure "Hmm, I need a character who doesn't require a tricky recovery and who can just attack randomly and still hope to hit."

I pick Wolf. I still lose because every time he does an Fsmash, I don't see it coming and can't react to it fast enough to dodge.

Third round. This time I choose Ness. He chooses Sonic. I think to myself "oh no. Fastest character in the game, and here I am with one-second lag, making me the slowest character in the game no matter who I pick."

Oddly, I won that match. Ness's PK Fire stops Sonic's dashes in their tracks, and a lot of his attacks, specifically the yo-yos, keep him very safe all around, even in lag. I found it easier to think ahead while playing as Ness for some reason. And I think I even connected with the bat at some point, although that was just a random swing.

I think it's because Ness is psychic and can read the opponent's mind. And Lucas hasn't been doing it as long, so his Psi powers aren't as developed yet.

I mean how else could Ness destroy the Pokey statue in SSE using PSI moves when Lucas couldn't?

Also, Ness seemingly had psi powers from birth. Lucas...well not to give any spoilers, but he has a somewhat "unusual" method of obtaining psi in Mother 3.

It was probably just luck.

Perfect explanation. I've always wondered why it's so easy to absorb projectiles in this game. Surely, it's because Ness has had so long to develop his powers ...

I was under the impression Ness's psychic abilities were enabled or "unlocked" (since he was the chosen one, so to speak) when the meteor hit.
I haven't played Mother 3 yet due to the in-progress translation, and I appreciate you not spoiling the plot.

Although I'm pretty sure I know how he gets his powers. Educated guess.

It involves butch transvestites. That's all I'll say.

It didn't come out in the U.S.
A translation for the ROM is currently undergo. It'll be done within a month or two.
