Friends getting mad at Project M when I win?

I played Project M for the first time about 4 months ago. Needless to say, I loved it. I think it's an extremely fun and competitive smash game.

So, I played it a TON. As in, at least a few hours every day with each character I use.

So naturally, I became a decent bit better than my friends who I play with. The characters I use most are Ike, Marth, Link, and Falco, but I also use Bowser and Ganondorf. I'm also working on Meta Knight at the moment.

Whenever I win (Which is the great majority of the time) they always make excuses or they just say "That's bull****!"

They will also play very defensively. A lot of the time, they'll wait for me to approach and then just shieldgrab, though I'll eventually get around it or just dash grab them myself.

As an example, they constantly say Marth is OP whenever I play him. I don't believe he is. while his grab range is crazy, other than that, I don't think he could really be branded as OP.

Or whenever I'm Link, they always complain about his Up B move, Spin Attack. I use it for ledgeguarding because it's very effective and it semi-spikes. They also complain when I grab them and then do up or down throw, then do an up smash followed by an up air with him, which puts on about 40% if all hits connect.

When I'm Ike, they just constantly claim he's OP. They say he hits too hard, which I think is just plain stupid reasoning. If you ask me, if you get hit by one of Ike's smash attacks, that is 100% your fault because they have a TON of startup and ending lag.

One of my friends even went so far as to play me as Marth against me as Sheik. And I ended up two stocking him. Yet they still bash him and call him OP.

Just to put it out there, I do use these characters. I don't just spam the C-stick with Marth or only stand there and do Up B over and over with Link or only use side smashes with Ike. I utilize most of their attacks.

It's gotten so bad that it's to the point where they'll actually team up on me in a free for all.

For example, the last match of tonight we played, I was Ike. It was on Hyrule Temple. One of my friends was Ivysaur, another one was Samus, and the 3rd friend was Wolf. The guy who was Ivysaur would simply run away while I tried putting damage on him, but since Samus and Wolf were basically targeting me, any damage I put on Ivysaur was pointless because he would just heal. And then blast me with the solarbeam over and over. I was the first to die. Big surprise, since they were all targeting me.

That kills the game if you ask me. Just because they can't beat me, they team up against me in a Free-for-all?

I know that sounds really arrogant, but it's the truth. I will literally just beat them with three stocks remaining most of the time on 1 on 1 matches.

Any thought or ideas of what to do about this?

Your friends are scrubs that like to john a lot due to their inability to adapt. They're not OP. If they feel the need to gang up on you, then just avoid playing with them. It's not fair for you to be punished because it's something they fail to grasp and let their emotions run high. A good idea would be to explain the mechanics of the game to them. In my years of gaming it makes everything so much clearer and understandable when I know how things work. If they still refuse to understand, then just pour salt in the wound and watch the fun.

Mess around with new characters when playing with them, or even play around with All Star VS. It's obvious that someone who spends a lot of time practicing with characters will be better than someone who doesn't, and losing over and over isn't really fun when you aren't dedicated to getting better at the game (which it seems like your friends aren't).
Once they play more and get better with their characters, bring back your mains and see how they do. You can even explain the counter play to anything they claim is OP, growing them as players (and you, once you're forced to adapt new strategies).

Main Roy and four stock them to further assert dominance.

Convert them to become Roy mains.

You will all be on even terms character-wise, stages don't matter much in dittos, and they'll learn to simply emulate successful tactics you use. They no longer can call you out for using an overpowered character, and they can't camp you or heal repeatedly.

Like xquqx said, All Star Versus is good, just pick Roy four times and you'll see successful results similar to the above.

That should solve everything as well as prepare for any foreseeable or unforeseeable problems.

Bring them water bottles to help increase the amount of blood in their salt-streams.

But seriously, I have dealt with exactly this. I solved it by getting even better, and even beating them handily when they ganged up on me (it is so fun to trick people into hitting eachother) until one or two just started accepting that I was much better and eventually it stopped. Once you have a reputation for being really good, the opposite kind of thing happens. People will overlook when your character IS OP and just assume it's because you are better.

In my "group" at school, pretty much everyone thought ZSS was like the best character in the game for a while, and now pretty much nobody does.

Another "way" is to make fun of them. Not aggressive or anything, but make jokes or puns about being salty. One time I had an order of fries, and when someone started johning I was like "Hold that thought for a second" and then held the fries in front of him and said "Can you put that salt on my fries?" What happened in my case (though I was the only one who started it) was that everyone started making fun of people for people salty or johning etc. and it happened less.

Maybe you could look up threads for the characters they play where it talks about the matchups against Ike/marth/link and email them the links so maybe they can look it over and take something away from it?

Or explain to them during the match what they are doing wrong and talk to them about why they should or shouldn't do that. if they keep doing it just punish them hard and say "see that is what you don't do that" over and over

If you're tired of them teaming up on you, my best suggestion (other than the perfectly good Roy one) is to murder all but one of them. Keep your favorite one alive and condition him to become a ruthless warrior in Project M. Then he will be your most powerful rival and best bet on a doubles partner in tournaments.

Trust me, I'm experienced.

When I play smash with my casual friends I always either just hit random or play with all of my worst characters. It's the only way to play with them without just standing still and letting them hit me.

^I can attest to this. Try All Star Versus and just characters you want to try there or worst characters/ones you've never played while your friends pick their main(s) 1-4 times. Having to switch with unfamiliar characters so much will keep you from getting in the zone or too comfy with a character.

I wish I could have a smash friend i could mentor but sadly I only have one friend who is so evenly matched with me except when he plays Ganon he 3 stocks my falco. *wants to only play him when he is Ganon* but we never get to smash often sadly.

Just tell your friends the truth. They suck and have no idea what they're talking about.

Yeah, my friends are like that as well.

One of my friends has all the tech needed since he plays :jigglypuffmelee: :kirby2: which are really simple outside of spending jumps, but he's a really passive player. He's my doubles partner. I almost always win but he's more well-matched with me than the other player I know. My other buddy I got into Melee this summer is pretty good, he beats people left and right in friendlies and rarely enters brackets when we travel because he feels too casual, and he kind of is. He doesn't really stick to or learn AT that well, and he sometimes spams a move over and over that leaves him really open. I'm talking characters' up b's and :toonlink:'s dair bad. :marthmelee::marth:'s counter worked for him 6 times in a row until a guy figured it out in brackets, and those are his two characters.

Smash isn't really strong in Chaffee County, but our crew's tightly-knit, and we travel a decent amount.

I'm hoping to find more players, I need someone like that who can three stock me. Nobody really can outside CO's top players who I'm inching up to fast despite maining:roymelee: (not the case with:roypm:though).
