So how should I react when my primary practice partner says I'm wasting my time playing this game because I'll never be good enough to win a tournament? Now this is all very possibly come about because in recent weeks he has fallen behind in skill and refuses to practice so he can reach the next step, and he's tired and salty from losing. But even still what should I say? I'm at a loss.

Attend a tournament near your area with your friend with the intention to have fun and doing the best you can. Your friend might need a small break but make sure he doesn't stop on a bad note, make sure he has fun or something before he takes a break.

Make sure he knows how to counter your options and what he's doing wrong but at the same time point out your mistakes too and what should've been done instead. Tournaments are a really fun experience to do, just don't expect to make it far for your first one.

Is your goal to win tournaments or to enjoy playing? Also your practice partner sounds like a ****
I think everyone somewhere inside them wants to win a tournament. But the reason I play is because when another friend of mine introduced me to Pm 8 months ago I told myself I was going to become the best that I could possibly be at this game. And that's what I'm trying to do but he has been hindering my progress with his saltiness lately.

Then don't worry about it too much. Call him out on it and see how he reacts, you can find another practice partner and you should do so if your current one is inhibiting your progress. That being said though, I assume you two are friends so make sure to consider how important the relationship is to you.

If that's his mentality about stuff then like...why do anything ever in life if you wont be the best at it? Why have a hobby at all? (this all being sarcasm of course)

Smash should just be about having fun and enjoying the journey of self improvement. You'll learn patience, focus, depth of multitasking, and just to have fun doing something you enjoy with a community that does the same. I'm sure there are other qualities you'll attain that im forgetting about as well. but, I mean...why does HE play the game then, unless he thinks he'll win a major or something anytime soon.

Keep doin' what you're doin. Keep practicing and get better and work on what you need to work on to be better. Even if you dont do as well as you want you should be able to look back and see improvement regardless and that should make anything worth it. There will always be someone better than you. At that stage we just need to take it into small goals like "i want to win my first match in winners bracket" "i want to win two matches in winners bracket" "i want to take a game off one of the top players in my scene" "I want to make it to the round where they stream matches" "i want to win that match" etc etc. It's all in small steps anyway. Don't let him get you down with the saltiness

Real talk

If you are now much better than him, and he refuses to try to improve, then there is no longer any reason for you to play him since it won't challenge either of you to get any better.

You need to play someone that wants to win and is willing to try.

If he's telling you that you're wasting your time, then playing him is a waste of your time.

Speak for yourself.

My advice is: Play the game for fun. Improving is part of the fun, too. Most stuff people do in their lives can be called "waste of time" anyways.
