I'm really surprised there were no posts on this, despite the popularity of Guitar Hero. Essentially, for the uninitiated, Frets On Fire is a freeware, open source version of Guitar Hero for PC. Due to being open source, the game can be pretty much limitless with mods. One of the neater things with it, is if you have Guitar Hero 1 and 2 for PS2 and a guitar, all you have to do is buy an adapter and you can jam on here.

Another cool thing is you can actually create your own songs, import songs, or edit songs. Really makes it fun to play "Cassie Eats Cockroaches" which I would never hear in Guitar Hero. If you don't have the guitar (360's one works, btw), then you can use your keyboard, as shown on their site.

Here is the wiki, check it out. It's a nice little thing while I jones for Rock Band for another week.

I think the Xbox 360 guitar would work pretty easily with this.

It does.

I am contemplating buying two of them for the split screen.

Doh. You even said that in the first post.

Too bad playing with the keyboard looks so ugly. Guitar shaped controller is really the only way to go IMO. If you wanna play a rhythm game on PC why not just play Stepmania then? Would be crazy if they made online play for this.

I WOULD play this, however I need alot of time to practice my actual guitar as it is. Always play GH when I'm at my friends though. Great fun.

I found Frets on Fire to be a pretty good program, although it doesn't run terribly run on my laptop, so I can't play it elsewhere. I guess I heard the keyboard made it harder, but I found it easier. Well, anything with a keyboard can make things easier, I guess. Wouldn't you agree?

Not for this, no.

Does anyone know if the game supports hammer-ons and pull-offs? I was playing an "amazing" level of Paint it Black, near impossible without it.

Also, I now have all the tracks from Guitar Hero 1, 2, 3 and the exclusive 360 only tracks.

I am REALLY fighting the temptation to just get a 360 controller off Ebay.

the newest version of FOF has ho/po's but theyre pretty terrible because the timing window is so small...

Well, it is open-ended, I am sure the timing thing is no problem to edit. I'll bring it up.

Got my controller adapter in the mail. I have mods to make it look and play identical to GH and I have all the songs from all 3 games (no 80s). It's pretty awesome.
