You can forward b off the stage, DI towards the stage and you will grab it.
Its a good alternative to simply running off and grabbing the edge.

edit: further clarification in 3rd post..

um, if you fast fall off the edge and sharply rotate the analog stick backward and into the upward diagonal direction into the stage, you pretty much insta-grab the ledge. the technique i'm describing has already been discovered by a long time ago and works for every character anyway... making this thread kind of pointless.

yes, but this is using the forward b instead, there are some things to note. both techniques take about the same time to excecute but the forward b has less input involved which makes it slightly more reliable (less input for same result basically).
Its also useful to know in case you accidentaly forward b off the edge or if you are attempting to forward b someone near the end and they dodge it.
I've tried used both the edge hog technique you described and this forward b edge hog and have found the forward b to simply be easier.
It's not significantly better than the normal edge hog but its useful to know, give it a try then see what you think.

I don't play Gannon really although i used to in melee. This is actually a good technique because it atleast allows you to use your bread and butter even if someone is near the ledge without fear of suiciding if you miss. As for a edgehog either method is fine its your preference but IMO this is a nice technique knowing you can do your forward b without death near a ledge.
