As Smash 4 tournaments start up, we're probably unfortunately going to see some (though hopefully not much) lag in matches. There are a couple ways I've found have reduced lag:
1. Make sure players are friends before the match.
I have talked to multiple players who say they experienced lag, then added their opponents as a friend on their 3DS, then found they didn't have as much (or any) lag. I'm not sure why this is, but it's worth considering for friendly matches. This generally won't be applicable for tournaments as people probably won't have the space on their 3DSs to add every player they play against, and it will take a fair bit of extra time.
2. Make sure players aren't using Power Saving Mode.
Power Saving Mode, like on other devices, allows the 3DS to last longer by limiting its capabilities. This generally isn't noticeable, but it does seem like this causes lag in local matches.
3. When available, have players plug their 3DSs in.
For both this and #2, it seems like the more battery power the 3DS is comfortable using, the less lag you'll experience. A way to imagine it is that Power Saving Mode makes the 3DS afraid of using a lot of power to provide a good connection, and having your 3DS plugged in makes it the least afraid to use the power to provide a good connection.
This seems to suggest that the battery and local connection is connected for the 3DS, but I don't know that for sure. If anyone with more knowledge in this area has any info, let me know.
