I've seen this before too. It's like he floats way above your head or something with an additional jump. However, I've only seen it with a Megaman opponent, so I'm not sure what is going on...

I have no explanation to offer, but can at least verify you're not too crazy :psycho:

Yeah it's a footstool. You were close to him right? There are times where you can footstool or get footstool while in the middle of action and not get the footstool animation/sent downwards. The computer does it to me all the time. I'm pretty sure that this worked exactly the same way that brawl did (I played sonic and would use footstooling after my up b to jump off people that were on the edge and it would appear as though I just suddenly got a 3rd jump).
