Follow up on grab

I've been having quite a bit of trouble following up a grab. It doesn't seem feasible to even try to follow up anything other than a dthrow, and very rarely do I managed to connect anything. Against an Olimar I play I usually try to chase it with a uair and get punished (by his dair?)

Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated.

I'll offer what I can but I'm sure Hyli will come along with something much more useful.

It really depends on the character and their percentage. Imo part of the reason Hyl's zair --> chargeshot --> grab combo is instant win like he said, is because it brings somebody from 0-29% and that's the general area where dthrow will launch pretty much everybody up high enough for fair/uair/upb combos. It's not so great on Sonics that move around a lot/have great reflexes(pretty much a requirement for him) though.

I can't really say for Olimar cause I haven't fought very many of them other than CPU, although bthrow off the edge to zair/missile spam works pretty good against him due to his terrible recovery. Seeing as Olimar is pretty much the only smally that isn't a massive pain to hit with zair also, it's a good option for him.

That also works well against heavies and the multiple jumpers(MK,Pit,DDD,Kirby,Jiggs). R.O.B also to an extent but be wary of doing it to him. That whole multiple upb's/attacking in between them thing of his is nasty to any edgeguarder.

Uthrow will kill at high enough percentages and it's good at keeping those with a bad air game above you.

Haven't found a use for fthrow at low percentages but at high percentages it can be used for dash -->dtilt for a quick finisher. Problem with it is that they can jump away and bad timing will lead to missing/being dair'd or just dash attacking them instead.

Back throw --> Dash attack --> up b at low %'s. Dthrow is really character specific as to what you can follow up with. Try this though: Dthrow then walk forward a bit. If you notice your opponent airdodges after you launch them up a lot then just do an empty sh. they should airdodge then. now you are free to punish them with uair or upb. If your opponent doesnt airdodge that much then just dthrow into up b immediatly. Uthrow is great for just reading your opponents reaction. Fthrow to sh homing missile is a good set up as well.

Any particular reason for homing missile? I can understand it for smaller types, but it seems like super missile would be better for Bowser/Ganondorf/Charizard/the lords/Snake/DDD and well another Samus I guess.

Or is it mainly for distraction/annoyance purposes.

I'll give those a try this weekend if no earlier. Thanks, Hylian.

Edit:

Hylian, I only saw you in person once at FC Diamond, but if I remember correctly you claw... right? Well, for you 'n anyone else who claws:

I was trying your recommendations out in training mode (no DIing smarts to practice against yet) and found a cool trick I figure would be worthwhile to share. Even with the gamecube controller, there's a lot of nuances with the controls that have changed that have been frustrating me. I right-hand claw (for those who don't know, that means one thumb almost always on the c-stick; index finger for other face buttons) so I've gotten into the habit of doing things like throwing with the c-stick. Anyways...

You can't normally throw with the c-stick in Brawl. It just hits the guy like you were hitting A. This means when I tried to bthrow to dash attack, I had to smack the stick twice in a row which was a little weird for me. However, I found you can hit A for at least one smack then, holding A, throw with the c-stick like you could in melee.

This may be a bit awkward for anyone who doesn't claw - face button and c-stick at the same time - but I figure this would be useful for those few who do claw and c-stick throws.

EDIT 2x:

Okay, silly me, non-clawers can just use Z instead of A. Just hold the initial button used to grab, whatever it was, if you don't want to risk them breaking out while smacking them around. So, umm, I guess this can be useful for anyone who c-sticks throws.
