My apologies for not finding more neutral sources, but I think these will suffice to explain the controversy. So what do you guys think? Should the telecoms receive retroactive immunity?

I believe they should. I don't support the massive wire-tapping that took place, but the telecoms only did what they were asked to do by the federal government. I heard an analogy that I think makes sense: if the police ask you to borrow your car to pursue a criminal, you should not be held liable for any damages they cause during that chase because you chose to help them. I think the same holds true for the telecoms. I mean really, could they have realistically said no?
