First tournament, what should I expect.

Same here, I've never been to a tournament and plan on going to one soon. I think it depends on your skill level, if you are new to the competitive scene, you might expect to lose all the matches, unless you are really good. As for what you bring, depends on what's required in a tourney, most of the time you just need a controller.

You should expect people playing games. Bring your 3DS/2DS and a copy of your game. If you wanna play friendlies just ask someone who's not currently playing a tournament match, they might oblige.
