Final Fantasy IX lagging on PSP

I recently downloaded FFIX for my PSP because I never had it as a kid, and as soon as I got to disk 3, the game started to lag. First just the audio on the FMVs was a little choppy but it progressed to choppy video and elongated loading times in the FMVs and in regular gameplay. Is this a known problem with a fix, or can anyone recommend a way to fix it? Resetting the game and the PSP did nothing. I'm using the latest firmware on a PSP 3000 if that matters.
