Background info:
I stopped playing Brawl about three months after I got the game. Since then, everyone I know seems to have lost their copy of Melee. I swear it's some kind of conspiracy. There's some jerk out there hoarding tiny gamecube disks of Melee and laughing at our collective pain.
ANYWAYS.
So to fulfill my quota of competitive fighting games I started fully focusing on Street Fighter and King of Fighters. I've played them even while playing Melee of course, but I never really got INTO them until all to copies of Melee owned by my friends and I mutinied and abandoned ship.
Funny thing I never noticed about fighting games. The reason my friends and I got as good as we did is because we all played Melee. The problem now is that my friends and I all found our separate niche games and seem to be camping there for the forseeable future. Sure, we may ford the river or cross a bridge and visit each other's games every once in awhile, but we clearly aren't on equal footing.
Example: I primarily play Capcom vs. Snk 2, and a bit of King of Fighters 2k2. Another friend primarily plays Street Fighter 4. Another friend primarily plays Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike. So, when we game, someone always gets a massive home-game advantage. Not that certain skills don't transfer over somewhat, but due to the difference in the game mechanics someone always has a disadvantage (a primary reason I advocate CvS2 so much, for the groove system).
And BECAUSE we play different games, we don't have a constant source of competitive competition. A redundant phrase, but I bet you understand what I mean. Since we aren't concentrating on that one game, the tendency for our skill levels to plateau and stagnate is much higher.
And this makes me miss Melee. You'd think one of us would just bite the bullet and pay the 10 dollars or whatever to get another copy of the game, right? I suppose I could harp on about the golden age of gaming in my sphere, the unification that came with Melee.
Naw.
On the plus side, Arcade Infinity is now a viable choice for a grander scale of competitive play for us. Any Smashboards members go to AI?
