I wanted to point some attention to a somewhat little known character, that I think has a somewhat high chance of appearing as a playable character in Brawl.
Felix of the Golden Sun series
Points that lead me to believe he just might be playable in Brawl:
- Roy, Marth in SSBM. Nintendo has proven that they are ready to include characters that aren't some of their more popular ones. Sure, FE was and is popular in Japan, but who in North America had ever even heard of Roy or Marth before SSBM? A handful of people only, considering the FE series had never had even a single game localized in the US yet. Didn't stop Nintendo from including them. Not to mention, they could have pulled these characters from the American version of the game, but opted to leave them in. Of course, I realize this could go for ANY Nintendo character, (see Ice Climbers, Game and Watch) which brings me to my next point...
- Free Marketting. Again, I'd like to bring up Roy and Marth. Roy and Marth were basically free advertising for Nintendo's upcoming (at the time) Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken game for Gameboy Advance. (Known simply as 'Fire Emblem' in North America.) These characters brought awareness to a series that at the time had not yet even been localized to the West, and set up Fire Emblem GBA to be accepted by the Americas. As you may or may not know, the third installment of the Golden Sun series was announced at E3 2007, for Nintendo DS (source) and once again the lead character for the game is Felix. (Felix was the main character of the second game, and had a significant role in the first.)
EDIT for failure!: Apparently this game was not as real as I thought. T_T I guess just change wherever I basically said "this game is coming out" to "in case Nintendo is working on Golden Sun 3."
- Ike. As an extention of my second point, this is more an example, but still very noteable. Ike undeniably gained some popularity from anyone who played Path of Radiance on Gamecube. Nintendo recognized this, and now he is appearing in Brawl. And surprise, surprise, guess who makes an appearance in the new FE Godess of Dawn game coming for Wii coming out just a month before SSBB hits? Just as Ike has a cult following, presumably so does Felix, as he was the star character of Golden Sun: The Lost Age. Not to mention, both Golden Sun games were million sellers (Source 1, Source 2).
- ZSamus. So what if Golden Sun is a series that is of now, only for handhelds? Zero Suit Samus shows that Nintendo is ready and willing to give the spotlight to a character primarily from a handheld game, as she was mainly featured in Metroid Zero Mission for GBA. Yes, Samus had past popularity and has been on consoles primarily, but the main point can't be denied that by including her as a full fledged playable character, that Nintendo is giving their handheld division of their company an equal opportunity when it comes to making it in the Brawl roster. Pikachu is also a character who's popularity came mainly from his games on handheld systems.
- Felix is ready to Brawl. If you've ever played either of the Golden Sun games for GBA, then you know what kinds of powers the characters possess in these games. Standard RPG fare - the anime pretty boy armed not only with his sword and blind faith for his cause, but Felix also has the power of earth psynergy. Basically, he can pseudo-psychically call forth magic in the form of stone and earth based attacks. And it would be SICK to see Felix unleash Megiddo (video, scroll to 00:16, last boss spoiler) or Odyssey (video, scroll to 2:12, last boss spoiler) as his Final Smash! There is admittedly the slight discouragement that Nintendo has already included many sword wielding characters, which can point to the possiblilty of him being axed in favor of someone else. But I think because of his added ability to use earth magic in his own game, that Sora can draw from that and really come up with a sword wielding character that is also very distinguishable and unique from the others.
----
So basically, that is my theory, and all in all, I think Felix has a decent shot at making it. I'd be kind of let down to see him end up as a support character update on the SSBB site, but I couldn't be upset that at least he'd be in. I'd really like to see him make it, as I've always had a liking for the Golden Sun series. Alright so everyone get to tearing apart my points, I'd like to hear some of your thoughts and see if you agree or disagree with me that he's likely to make it in. ^_^
