Not sure if I mentioned it or not, but outside of Smash, I love playing JRPG's. To me, they're some of the best of challenging a person's ability to strategize a battle before and during the match. I always have had a soft side for good JRPG's and their battle systems, so I'm rather curious what kind of systems you all like and why. Doesn't necessarily have to be your favorite game, but if you really found the gameplay and mechanics and the like to be really fun, give it a small nod!

Favorite JRPG battle systems? Lets see...

I did enjoyed Tales of Symphonia. It had co-op and was very fun from what I remember from playing it long ago. Though I do have to say it was the ONLY Tales game I enjoyed at all. Though I looked at Berseria's trailer and it's battle system looks pretty promising.

There's also the battle system in Persona 4. It was solid, and all the characters have something exclusive to them that made you use them in different ways. So I thought it was fair enough when you're trying to plan. It was a satisfying experience.

Off the top of my head, the Press Turn system in SMT3/4 is probably my favorite. FFX's CTB system was also pretty good.

It's tied between Tales of Symphonia and Persona 4 for me, they both felt engaging which makes the experience grind feel less tedious.

I think Xenoblade's battle system is pretty good.

Came to say this. They REALLY dumbed it down for Persona 3/4 though, and it wasn't implemented so great in SMT4 either. But Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 handled it near perfectly, aside from a few rare instances of random enemies in DDS being able to wipe you out before you even get a single turn.

Out of the JRPG's I've played(which isn't many), The Legend of Dragoon had a battle system that really clicked with me. Especially when it comes to the combo system most of the characters could utilize.

Xenoblade(Classic and X) also has a pretty well-thought out battle system.

I think my top two favorite JRPG battle systems are probably the ones in Bravely Default and the Mario & Luigi series.

I like the many different options Bravely Default gives you. The relatively diverse job system with sub-jobs and support abilities is alright by itself. There's also the Brave/Default system, which spices up the standard JRPG formula by adding another variable and encouraging different types of strategies. I'm a big fan of the way BD handles random encounters too. Being able to adjust them on the fly so you can have none if you don't want to hassle with them or tons if you want to level up for a bit is really nice. Plus, having the option to Brave your way through them makes them go by a lot quicker, as does being able to fast forward battle animations. Overall, I'd say the game does a good job of building upon the strengths of turn-based RPGs while making the more frustrating/tedious parts of them much easier to stomach.

As for the Mario & Luigi series, I just like how active their battle systems are. I don't think battles ever really get boring, especially since each new game tends to add a wrinkle to them to keep them sort of fresh. I'm also a fan of the battle systems in the other Mario RPGs for pretty much the same reason.

Paper Mario is another one that has a fantastic battle system. It's very active compared to others I've played and pretty much relies on your mastery of action commands to succeed in the game's battles, instead of just blindly attacking a target and hoping for a crit or something.
