Here's an idea for a thread I had that I thought was fun. It's just as the title says, what is your favorite console and why?

In case you're wondering why I excluded so many pre-NES consoles from the list, it's because so many of them are one-note and weren't on the market very long. Not to mention there were so damn many of them it would have bloated an already bloated list.

Imma go with the trusty lunch box, the nintendo gamecube. The GC had a lotta solid titles, that people just didn't notice. I did like the PS2 tho... but that's because of FF, kingdom hearts 1 & 2 and the Rachet & Clank series.

The PS2 is my favorite. It had a ton of classics, and I felt like it was the last time we saw a lot of super creative/weird games on consoles. It also is home to my favorite game, We Love Katamari.

Honorable mentions go to the Saturn, Dreamcast, SNES, and PlayStation.

Both the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube. Mainly due to the awesome Mario titles for those systems and of course Melee.

For me its the Xbox 360, not only was it my first console that I got to play multiplayer, but its the first console that had a game I got competitively in (Halo 3). The memories on Halo man, to real..

If you want to see my opinion, it is here.

I do feel like I should give a shoutout to the PS2 as it was the first console I owned and the first console I played online with (we bought the modem that screwed into the back of the console), had some great games (DQ VIII, Ratchet & Clank, Shadow of the Colossus, Jak & Daxter, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, etc.), and introduced me to non-Nintendo console gaming. It should also be noted that it mine and all of my friend's PS2s still functioning (unlike many PS3s or 360s) and is still in frequent usage to revisit classics from the 6th generation. In addition, its segmented memory cards are wonderful as you wouldn't lose all of your save data because of one corrupt file.

EDIT: Add Kingdom Hearts and FF X to the list of amazing exclusive games. Also, I forgot to mention that it was the best-selling console of all time, so the wide consumer-base caused it to have a lot of great third-party support.

The GameCube was the more nostalgic console for me, but IMO the PS2 really was the superior machine with it's massive library of solid exclusives and excellent third party support. Not to mention it had complete backward compatibility with the PS1's library, controller and memory cards, further expanding a PS2 owner's game selection.

I also would like to get a positive mention to the Genesis. I am bias since it was my first console and I've always enjoyed Sonic's games more than Mario's. That being said, it also had a ton of great beat-em-ups like Streets of Rage and Golden Ax, the Phantasy Star series, Shining Force, Castlevania Bloodlines and many more solid at-the-time exclusives.

It's the PS1 for me. Great console with a great game library. It's also home of my favorite franchise Spyro the Dragon.

Honorable mentions: SNES, Gamecube, DS, GBA, PS2

Also, another reason the PS1 is a good console is because it introduced the concept of having two analog sticks instead of one, making a modern-day standard for controllers.

Also, some controller fun facts that I've put discovered over the years.
To start off our little controller adventure, I'd like to introduce you to the SNES controller. A humble little thing that would be the inspiration for many controllers in the future.

SNES controller:

Now, I would like to present to you the Playstation controller. What they did was take the SNES controller, change the button names, make the Start and Select buttons look like Play and Stop (because the PS1 also doubled as a CD player), added another pair of shoulder buttons, and got a couple of grips.

PS1 controller:

Then, they later released the Dualshock on the PS1, adding dual analog sticks to their previous design. Sony also kept this general design for the rest of their controllers, so they are now on the Dualshock 4.

Dualshock:

Skip ahead quite a few years to the Xbox 360 and you see Microsoft copying this design, but making it their own by changing R2 and L2 to triggers, switching the left DPad and analog stick, changing the names and shapes of the Start and Select buttons, adding a big green button, and changing the button names back to the originals with the X and Y buttons flipped.

360 controller:

Then, the Wii U Pro controller came out pretty recently to much complaint by Microsoft fanboys. They were calling it a rip-off of the 360 controller because they had the same design, but with the X and Y buttons flipped and the right analog stick switched with the buttons. I guess what I'm trying to say is Nintendo was just ripping off of a modified version of their controller.

Wii U Pro controller:

Also, just saying that the original Xbox controller looks like a combination of a Dreamcast controller and a Saturn controller.

Dreamcast:

Saturn:

My vote went to SNES. My reasoning was based only on the games that first debuted on that console. A good number of JRPGs that I love started on that console. There's also a lot of great games from Nintendo during that era that I still play today. I also like the fact on how much 3rd party support the game had. 2nd place would've gone to PS2 maybe if we're talking about game library.

If I voted based on everything the console offered, it'd be PS3. Nice wireless controllers that's USB chargeable. Free online with a pretty decent ID system. PSN store offers a good amount to people. Plus I love that the console isn't really region locked, so I can important almost anything or buy things from other PSN stores.
