Fastest Movement Option? Walking/Running

Okay, so I know that Falco's walking speed is faster than his running speed, but this doesn't necessarily make it the better option for movement. I've been trying to find the answer to which is faster over a short distance. It seems like the time it takes to accelerate to the full walking speed would make it a slower option for a short distance compared to just running. Is this true? Over a short distance running is faster because of the acceleration time?

If the running speed is faster for use in a short distance, what about turning around? If your opponent is behind you and you want to get there, which is faster
1. dash forward and then dash back (very quick dash dance)
2. just dash backwards (turning around animation from a stand might be slower? don't know)

Also, even after all of that I'm pretty sure that Falco's wave surf (dash into wave dash) is his fastest option to get across the field. This is true for a long distance right? (If you don't care about being locked into the wave dash animation)

yes completely wave surfing is the best movement option falco has. for a few reasons

1. its the fastest movement option
2. it keeps you in a neutral position so you can throw out more moves. the Wavedashing being implemented in his movement allows you to keep your momentum and use tilts, smash attacks, aerials, grabs, shield. where as when your dashing it limits your options.
3. looks sick AF

The only real down side is it takes practice to get that fluid movement, but its worth it in the long run.

in the situation where your opponent is behind you, just dash backwards. if you are facing one direction and then you input a dash for the opposite direction, you turn around in one frame.

and yea, it looks like the "wave surf" is the fastest way to cover large distances if you aren't worried about being helpless in the wavedash animation. I think sometimes Falco's illusion can be used to cover long distances as well. check this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjqVbKmvw0k. @ 10:24 in this match, mango opts to illusion across the stage instead of the 'wavesurf' to finish off the stock - not sure if this was for style though. i've heard a few good players say that falco's phantasm can be used to cover distances... so who knows.

Falco's max run speed is higher than his max walk speed. The difference is much smaller than with most characters though. Max angle wd average speed is slightly higher than his running speed. Dashing before wd makes you move during the 5 frames jumpsquat, so you cover slightly more distance than with just wd, but your movement after the airdodge is same in both cases, because airdodge sets velocity at a fixed value. The increase is small, but noticeable. It's also worth to note that falco's initial dash speed is higher than his run speed, and he will decelerate during dash, so short dash -> wd is probably fastest.

For turning, dashing back is a lot faster than dd. If you smash your stick to smash turn, turn only takes 1 frame and you dash already on the second. But if you dash forward, you can't turn before frame 4, so you'll move away from your goal before you can even turn, and it takes longer too.

Here's an incredible source for grounded movement: http://smashboards.com/threads/ultimate-ground-movement-analysis-turbo-edition.392367/

Ok thanks. Ya, for short distances the initial dash speed makes it a lot better option.
