While everyone's crying that Ness is gone... despite no one saying he is (anyone but me notice Sakurai mentions Ness? When you wonder if one thing can surpass another you usually need both for comparison purposes...)

But here's the great thing for character purposes with Lucas.... We've got a Japanese Exclusive character in the STARTING ROSTER. That makes me pretty darn happy to think that guys like Stafy and Sukapon have a better chance now, seeing that Sakurai didn't wait and make someone like Lucas unlockable.

If anything this "Japan only" update could lower there chances of making it in. Sakurai cannot fill SSBB with Japan only characters because, guess what? Didn't you know? Super Smash Brothers Brawl is being released world-wide, so there has to be a limit on Japan only characters.

I like the idea of Japanese only characters...

I certainly hope he isn't a Japan-only character.

I'm just going to be blunt.

I don't think Sakurai gives a sh-t, period.

I highly doubt he's going to look at characters like Takamaru and Skapon, characters with strong fanbases in Japan, and say, "Nope, Japan only, not going in." automatically. I think we might just see more Japan-only characters in Brawl this time around.

BAH.

Japan's part of the world too. Or did you forget that fact?

Games aren't suddenly any less good because they've never been released in America. Heck, Mother 3 is epic, strange, and heartrending. Legend of Stafy's delightfully upbeat while still being stunningly difficult. Joy Mech Fight's astounding fast paced for an NES era fighting game. And so on and so on.

And a lot more people are now aware of Japanese exclusive characters than were back in the Melee days. My own threads have helped with this I like to think, as well as IGN's "Smash It Up" roster threads highlighting Japanese exclusive characters too.

I said limit, It seems that you interpreted what I stated as, "Well there are not going to be anymore Japan only characters" obviously those Japan only characters with a strong fanbase are going to have an incentive of being in than others.

The limit that I'm thinking of for too many Japan only characters is being over 7 characters that only had there games released in Japan.

Less good? Looks like you need to brush up on your English.

Aaaah.

You know, technically, Lucas is an odd case. Earthbound most definitely did release in the US, while the sequel, Mother 3 did not. So Lucas may be from a game that wasn't released in the states, but from a franchise that definitely was...

So that leaves characters like Stafy, whose franchise was never outside of Japan, but the character himself did appear outside of Japan (Stafy cameos in games like Superstar Saga, Super Princess Peach, etc.)

And characters like Sukapon or Takamaru, whose franchises have never been outside of Japan... although Takamaru did appear in Pikmin 2...

...Gah... it would've been so much easier if today's update had been Tom Nook :p

I don't think that matters, there still going to add tons of MOTHER 3 stuff in the game. Not to mention some of these Japan only characters are being picked out of the litter of polls multiple times such as Takamru, but I think Sakruai likes him A LOT for some reason. I mean he was brought up BY HIM in the first Smash Bros. questionnaire and then several times on the melee one as well.

To those arguing about how many Japan-exclusives we'll get, you may want to note [thread=72642]Sakurai's journal[/thread] on the matter:

#171-180: In this update, Sakurai basically just says that since Smash Bros is popular throughout the world, he can't just use characters that are only popular in Japan. But then he brings up that it worked for the Fire Emblem characters. Once, a black man (yes, he said that) thanked Sakurai for creating Roy just for him.

Another typically cryptic response doesn't necessarily tell us if he will/won't include obscure Japanese characters, but given the general tone of his response, I'm leaning heavily towards no.
I think Marths chances just went up...
Difficult to believe, considering hes been almost guaranteed from the start.

That quote from Mr. Sakurai makes it sound like he doesn't want the roster to be completely filled with characters like Tingle, Black Shadow, and Gardevoir who are only popular in Japan...and, with characters that are popular worldwide like Mario, Pikachu, and Ike, it isn't. So that quote doesn't really help much. :1

You're missing the point. It shows he is very much so aware of and cares about how many Japan-only characters are put and intends to consciously limit it so as to better appeal to a worldwide audience, which was something some posters were claiming was not the case. That means it it is true that the more Japan-only characters we learn about, the less likely it becomes for others to be in.

the grim lizard said:
That quote is really old, too, by the way...
I'm well aware, I assure you; merely pointing out that we do have some information straight from Sakurai himself on the topic.

Hes not from the starting roster? What part of "newcomers are unlockable" do you not understand?

And plus, Ness has not been deconfirmed, so keep quiet.
who said that newcomers are going to be unlockables?
maybe some of them, but not all, atleast Sakurai never said they where going to be.

Also, for the first post, who said that Lucas is in the starting roster? 'couse I dont remember anyone saying he was going to be, maybe he is in the starting roster, maybe he is not.

Sorry, but I just don't like when people talk like they know, when they oviously don't know, atleast not for shure.

"challenger approaching" said when he was intro'd makes me feel he will be unlockable, not a starter
Problem with that theory is that the one confirmed unlockable, Snake, didn't come with that banner. Thus far, the pattern with it has been that it is attached to any newcomer who is being announced for the first time on the dojo - Ike, Diddy, Pokèmon Trainer, and Lucas all had it, while the others (all of whom were announced via the first trailer) did not - so its distinctly possible it signifies nothing more than that.

After the melee release in the melee questionaire Sakurai said the chances of Skapon being in another Smash are unlikely. By the way, I wouldn't take a comment that immediately contradicts itself with another comment, that serious. Especially when we get a Japan-only starter and a spoiler stage with him...

But since when did people think Meta-Knight is unlockable??? There really hasn't been any reason to believe that...

Anyways, I'd bet the characters announced on the dojo are all starters (with the POSSIBLE exception of Snake) going by the way the Melee website was updated, and the common sense. Sure, we don't know it, but really, it doesn't make sense to reveal hidden characters before release.

I really hope Stafy makes it. However, that seems like quite the challenge for a moveset.

Meta-Knight didn't either
And he was one of those revealed in the first trailer, which goes along with the observation I mentioned.

#251-260: Sakurai in response to an email asking that everything be unlocked as a default = "Well... that is a tough question. As long as the internet exists, all secrets will be revealed quickly. Sometimes even before the game comes out, even. Secret characters are one of the fun parts of Smash. Although you don't want to find out until the very end, I guess [literally: 'after all,' so there is no doubt in this statement] I'll reveal them. Again, just like "Smash fist" [literally: 'Sumabura ken,' the name of the Japanese SSBM site?] I can't just hold these characters back. "
As some are all too quick to point out, he gives no definite time frame for the revelation of secret characters here, but it does to me seem to heavily imply they will be revealed before the release (else his observation that they'll all be revealed quickly on the internet will come to pass, making him revealing them later redundant).

I think it makes more sense for Japan-only characters to be starters. I mean, wouldn't it be a little anti-climatic if this happened:

"I just beat the Subspace Emissary on Intense, and it's time to collect my juicy reward! I hope it's a--- OH SWEET JESUS---- New challenger approaching! Looks like its the silhouette of a...swordsman?! I hope it's WW Link!"
*Takamaru appears*

oh shh. it isn't nintendo all stars if there's characters that NO one's heard of...

WOOT! I really hope Sukapon is in Brawl :DD
He probably won't be playable if he does. I agree prettymanfairy, that is why I'm glad that the polls remained Japan-only, as I think taking account of other countries would take AWAY from the game.

This post fails on the basis of Sakurai once stating that he would have FEW TO ZERO japan only characters in Brawl this time around.

I see Japanese characters as a positive because it raises the chances of the franchises being brought over to the states. Look at Fire Emblem....

(I really wanna play Mother 3 and the Starfy games)
