Hate to be that guy but no one is going to give smash a bad rating. It could be the worst smash game to ever come out and people would still give it nearly perfect scores because reviewers wouldn't be able to see that...

Phew! To be honest I was a little worried. I knew the game would be high quality, but I thought the mobile limitations might hinder it. I guess next we have to see how it fares with Western reviewers.

*Shrugs* I loved Brawl.

I mean, you would have to be a pretty big fool to think a review can properly ascertain the level of competitiveness that the game would be sitting at. That's something that we can only really determine after a few months of play to see what can be done with it.

They rated it as a fun party game, which is exactly what it is

I didn't use the Brawl example as a way to mock them btw, I like Brawl myself, I just used it to compare to the previous installment. Famitsu has been involved with quite a bit of controversy since the mid-2000s though, which is what my second comment was targeted at.

Famitsu gives high scores to pretty much everything though.

I'll go ahead and point out that Jojo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle got a perfect score. Let's all go play that competitively.

Because 37/40 and 40/40 means a massive difference in quality.

I'd rather just say "It's a Must Buy" or "It's Mediocre" then give it a number.

Review scores are useless nowadays.

I can't agree more. My trust always goes to the small opinion pieces out there, not the big name review scores.
Especially since it's easier to know what position they're judging the game on.

Not sure, but I bet their gripe was the controls. As tight and compact as they are, they aren't made for a Smash Game.
