Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there something new in Ultimate that I just don't get?
I've been playing smash since N64 and I've never run in to this issue. I also notice it quite a lot online as well with people throwing smash attacks or what have you the wrong way.

If they're being spun around while using up/down smashes or tilts, they might be throwing the C-stick into the diagonal inputs that cause you to turn the move around by accident. I was throwing Utilt the wrong way a whole lot before I realized the C-stick was capable of doing that now.

Otherwise, it might just be bad reads, expecting an opponent to roll behind them.

Well that answers my question haha. That seems like a bit of an odd mechanic to add in though...

A possibility that occurs to me is that it could be a side effect of them making the C-stick also emulate directional inputs? The stick can also angle certain Ftilts and Fsmashes up or down by angling the stick a little bit, so I figure there's a certain threshold where the directional input made by the stick during a diagonal U/Dtilt also turns you around. Would have to check whether moving the left stick into those angles also causes a turnaround.
