Let me start out by saying i Love the smash series in its entirety. 64 melee brawl pm and smash 4 i would play any one of them with anyone that wanted to. I really enjoy the game of smash 4. The competitive scene is very entertaining right now and it's a fun game to play. A great in-between of melee and brawl. But I couldn't deal with the community anymore so I'm attempting to pick up melee and pm and be a member of that community now while still watching smash 4 tournaments and youtube videos.
Whether it's facebook groups, YouTube comments or twitch chats, it seems the most popular thing to do when it comes to discussing smash 4, is to whine about it. Whether it's whining about how frequently one character is used or how infrequently another one is used, how "braindead" a character is or how badly a top tier needs nerfs, the complaining never stops. Twitch chats are even worse because whenever a top tier or a more campy projectile based character like olimar comes on the chat floods with things like, "Oh great another sheik ResidentSleeper" or "Oh boy olim- ResidentSleeper" and it's painful to sit there and read it all.
Virtually every good character gets complained about for being braindead. A term I've grown to hate more than any i see in chats or comments, made very popular by shofu if I'm not mistaken. Sheik ness diddy sonic rosalina luigi olimar fox mario captain falcon zero suit samus custom villager and custom dk have all been called braindead in things I've watched. I've even seen remarks that r.o.b. is cancerous, and megaman and pacman are camping pos's. It never ends. It's sad to see good players catching heat for the characters they play like zero and dabuz. Or to see other good players get criticized for being a "tier *****" (another terribly useless term) for having a high tier secondary like dkwill or poyo. And if you drop a low/mid tier for a high tier like sheik or rosa, or just say you like them and are thinking of picking them up, commenters want to burn you at the stake, you've committed treason in their eyes. Everyone apparently wants to see palutenas and marths and samuses and charizards compete even though those characters are just not going to get you anywhere in tournament right now.
The characters that aren't very competitive "need buffs" and the characters that consistently place "need nerfs." Melee has been going strong for over 13 years without a single buff or nerf to any character, and it's still arguably a more popular game in tournament than smash 4. Imagine where melee would be if it was created for the wii u and patches were available to it. It'd be drastically different and in my opinion, for the worse. Melee and brawl didn't have patches and their competitive scenes lasted quite a while, so why in less than one year do we act like we know what characters have to drastically change?
Another strong deciding factor on my leaving the smash 4 scene was the patches themselves. The embodiment of the community getting rewarded for their complaining and characters getting worse and worse until eventually we're back looking like competitive brawl. Just look at what happened to diddy kong. Now i agree diddy was actually overpowered and one of the few things that patching out was definitely beneficial, but why do it twice in two months? The first bunch of nerfs wasn't enough? Unnecessary nerfs were also incredibly frustrating. Like rob's up throw killing 30-40% later and fox's jab jab chains being taken out. Those characters were not over centralizing and those were arguably those two characters trademark kill options, why remove them when it's not even close to overpowered? And what's to stop them from taking away every characters best options eventually. Then what are we left with? The community seems to want to see every character nerfed and buffed until all 50 something characters can compete on an even playing field. And without seriously drastic changes to whole movesets that's just not going to happen, but it seems nintendo might keep trying for it and it makes me very nervous. Are they eventually going to change the angle of falcon's dthrow, give sheik a ton more landing lag on aerials, increase the knockback of luigi's dthrow, decrease the knockback of zss's up b, and everything else the community wants to see? I don't see a reason to think they won't get close to that. Every 8 weeks your character is liable to become way worse than before, and you have to learn new things about the game that you had maybe perfected before. It just isn't an enjoyable thing to do.
All this being said I definitely still watch top 32 or top 8 of the big tournaments vgbc and CT streams and i still watch videos from people like zero and false and nairo. But i ignore the chats the best i can and don't really play anymore at all. But i hope to see a change in the near future in the way of thinking about the game and I'm open to coming back if the game stabilizes and the community calms down.
