Most of the time it's one of these:

1) You eat too late (too close to bedtime)
2) You eat sugar or drink sodas/coffee too late (too close to bedtime)
3) You don't get enough exercise to tire your body (exercise can mean many things *cough*cough*)
4) You are doing something too exciting or engaging right before trying to sleep.
5) Maybe the whole 16 hours awake 8 hours of sleep isn't for you

Regarding #5 - everyone is different, most seem to settle on 8 (or are pressured into that number), some only need 6 hours, others need 10 hours, a rare few only need 4. Some people are better off sleeping 2 times a day or many small naps during a day (very common in professions that require it like astronauts and soldiers)

I sleep 2 times a day (biphasic) and it's pretty awesome. ~4.5 hours and then ~1.5 hours, never have to set alarm clocks and I fall asleep fast and wake up pretty consistently at the same times once I got in the groove. In many European countries this is normal (they nap midday, "siesta") staying awake for a whole 16 hours is a marathon, gotta take a break IMO it seems more natural.

Sometimes I value sleep, sometimes I dont. For me, it's a matter of how I feel at the moment.

Sleep is probably the most important and ignored aspect to our health.

Depending on the quality and quantity of sleep you get it can heavily affect your weight, mood, mental condition, physical appearance, appetite, metabolism, etc

It's compounding too, so if you neglect it for months at a time everything just starts adding up and it can have serious long lasting side effects concerning weight gain, memory, and other important things.
