Evolving by happiness

How can you tell if your pokemon will evolve next level? I heard if you give them a certain number of poffins it'll work, but i dont have any specifics. I need this for a lot of pokemon, but I'm currently working on Riolu/Lucario. Any tips?

If you go to Jubilife City, and talk to the president of the Poketech company he'll give you some upgrades, in which I believe one of them is a device to see how your Pokemon feel about you. Also, give it massages at Veilstone City and even suppliments such as Carbos and Protein.

And with that Poketch device, if 2 hearts show up, your Pokemon is ready to evolve.

do the hearts have to grow bigger or do i just need two?
