evil and scared faces

does anyone know which characters can do it and which can't? the cheat is supposed to be if you beat the game on very hard with one life and no continues, you get a scared or evil face with that character. i did it with donkey kong and it didn't work, and im really frustrated that it didn't work. someone help me out?

You need to do it with link. Then, link gets all black and the other characters gets red eyes. It's pretty cool, I've done it myself.
