Era of Crossovers?

I've been thinking lately that we seem to be in some sort of crossover era with video games. I mean, crossovers have always happened, but I feel that the extent and amount has really surged.

Besides Smash Bros, now we have Mario Kart 8, Yoshi's Woolly World and Super Mario Maker all making plenty of crossovers. Games like Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions exhibit countless crossovers. Upcoming indie games like Runbow and Hex Heroes feature characters from other indie titles, making them a sort of "Indie Smash Bros." It's like everything is just mashing together and part of me loves it and part of me wonders just how far it will go, with some trepidation.

Most definitely. Lots of collaborations these days, probably more so than usual.

Part of it is probably to strengthen brands by working together. Another might be because of how HD development has affected Japanese game development. Lots of outsourcing/ideas is being made where a company gets to use a franchise in whatever way they want. I wouldn't have expected to have seen something like SMTxFE ever before its reveal.
