Hey guys, this thread was inspired by a couple matches I've had with friends where we allowed custom equipment. A very surprising thing that happened is that we had a ton of fun. With equipment, any character could be good if you distributed the stats and bonuses to cover their weaknesses and elevate their strengths in just the right way. The quickly became less about counter picks and character match ups, and more about who was the cleverest at taking would be weaknesses of a character and overcoming them.
Many of you reading this can already see a problem though. What started out as a competition to come up with the best build to cover all basis quickly degenerated into polarized builds where the match was pretty much decided as soon as you found you found out their stats. A big and bulky Charizard with defense boosts would lose 9/10 times to a Sonic with +70 speed.
We decided we'd begin setting up rules to encourage a balanced metagame. For instance, a general rule of no more than +50 attack on any character was considered because it leads to characters being in kill percents after only 3 or 4 hits. Before we decided anything though, we wanted to see what other people thought.
The goal is to have fun and engaging matches. I'd like to discuss each character, what buffs they need to be fun to play as, what buffs they can get that would make them too good to be fun to play against, and what pieces of equipment in general detract from the game. Any thoughts are welcome, and since the best way to know if a build is any good is to play people, feel free to add me as a friend (my fc is to the left) and challenge me any time I'm online (which is fairly often).
I'm going to go ahead and nominate Explosive Perfect Shield for a ban from regulated equipment matches because it interrupts the pace of the match so much and requires little actual action by the opponent to punish approaches. Any match with this piece of equipment inevitably leads to the other player doing little more than going in for grabs, and it's just boring. If you don't have any suggestions for other things, place your thoughts on if Explosive Perfect Shield adds or subtracts anything to the game that makes it worth keeping or banning.
