Editing Effects?

Alright, I'm fairly new to the texture hacking scene (having only created a few of my own textures), so could someone let me know how I get my edited effect files into the game (via an SD loader)? I understand that I'll end up with the file 'Fit(character name).pac', but how do I end up there? Here's what I did:

I ran the file through SSBextract, then the .pac file that I got from that went to step1_extract in ASH, ending up with a bunch of folders, some of which had .tga files that I edited in Photoshop and saved over... then what? (When I ran step2 in my ASH folder, I ended up with a .pac file that froze my game.) Do I run SSBBinsert? Do I do something different? Have I messed up already?

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you placing the .pac in the character's folder, named FitCharacter.pac? It shouldn't freeze the game...

Just curious, how exactly are you extracting the effects files in the first place? I'm trying to get into this myself, and maybe I could test a few things on my own to see what's wrong.
