Duo Classic Mode and Unlockables

Just a quick question and discussion that I couldn't find the answer for without spoiling any unlockables (just picked up a wii u and the latest ssb)

Can you still unlock characters and other unlockables when playing Classic mode with a friend?

On a side note, I don't have any online friends to play this with and wanted to get some feed back on the online multiplayer, is there any lag issues? Only sometimes, or does it have input lag here and there? Is it enjoyable? Let me know of your best/worst multiplayer experience if possible.

Yes, you can still unlock all non-DLC characters when playing multiplayer.

There is always some sort of lag when playing. Sometimes it is worse than other times, and sometimes it is barely noticeable.
