DS download play multiplayer option?

As we all know (well at least most of us know) the DS and 3DS have an option to play games multiplayer with one game cart, this is called DS download play. My question for you guys is:

1. Do you think Smash 3DS will have this option

2. If so, what would be the limitation to only having 1 cart?

3. In games such as Kirby Triple Deluxe, players with the carts were allowed to pick which ability (in smash's case character) they wanted to use from the roster and the downloaders were only allowed to choose from 2 abilities (characters. If you could only pick 4 characters, which characters would you want them to be?

Also I have a Jpn 3DS so I will be importing a copy of smash, you think I'll be ably to play multiplayer with my friend (he doesn't have a 3DS) using my Jpn 3DS and my American 3DSXL when its released here?

Yeah, I've been wondering about this too. I hope we don't need another copy to play as the whole roster or I'll be pissed. That will give the Wii U version an advantage over the 3DS version as you only need one copy for the Wii U whereas ALL your friends need to buy the 3DS version to enjoy playing with you. I suppose if they do stupidly limit it then you would be stuck with the O12 (barring Jigglypuff and Ness if they're unlockable)

I'm not sure about this....as much as I'd hope the feature is there....you know how much Nintendo loves the money. xD

1. I'd like for it to, but I doubt it will.
2. Limited roster, maybe, and/or limited stage choices and only Versus mode.
3. Easily all of the Fire Emblem characters.

I see the selection being limited to just Miis & Battlefield, maybe even just Mii Brawler & not even the other 2.

If I'm not mistaken, download play only allows up to 52MB(?) of data to be transferred...? That doesn't sound too good for download play for Smash.

Right, it has to be extremely minimalistic, like just 1 character, maybe 2.

It would make no sense to let downloaders play with the full roster. As much as I would love to have that, business-wise, it'd make no sense. The purpose of download play is to give players' friends and family a taste of the game as a sort of engaged demo, and convince them to buy it for themselves. Giving them access to the whole roster defeats the purpose of that italicized part.

I anticipate something akin to Mario Kart 7 in which downloaders only get to play as Shy Guy in a standard kart. In Smash's case, it could be a basic Mii, or Mario. You get to play regular matches with your friends and try out the game, but if you want to play as all those cool characters, you're gonna have to go buy a copy.

I just hope that they can avoid the downside of download play in that one person with a cartridge has to host and everyone else has to download. I played Metroid Prime Hunters with my little brother and cousin on vacation this year, and even though two of us own a copy, the fact that the third didn't made it so that only one of us could pick someone other than Samus. If three guys own Smash and the fourth doesn't, and everybody but one can only pick Mario, that'll kill the mood really quickly.

I thought they said that download play wasn't going to be a viable option. Didn't they say that every person is going to need their own copy of the game?

I could see it being basic Mii fighters only.
Yeah. It would give the player an opportunity to try out three distinct playstyles, too. You could pick between basic swordfighter, basic brawler and basic shooter. Add a little spice while withholding all the fan favorites. Perfect.

Nintendo has always been really skimpy with DS Download play. It would be awesome if they allow people to play multiplayer without everyone owning the game. When we were younger my siblings and I would've played all the games we owned together, but it always felt kind of dumb to have to buy the same exact game. Some games we bought over and many games we didn't. I do remember New Super Mario Bros DS and Mario Kart DS being really awesome with DS Download Play, but very few games actually did that. There are games that I had that my brother didn't want to buy but he would've played multiplayer with me, so I don't think it's very effective for them to limit it since not everyone is going to buy every game their friend owns, sometimes people have to play and experience the game with friends before they think, "I'd like to be able to play this by myself and with my other friends." That's my take on it at least.

In regard to Smash Bros if everyone in the household owns a 3DS and there's only one copy of Smash 3DS but everyone could play off that then it would be awesome. But will full roster Multiplayer Download Play really hurt sales? People always invite friends over for Smash so I don't see it being much different for the 3DS, if a person wants to play on their own or have parties on their own time with perhaps other friends they'll buy it.

I know in games such as jump ultimate stars, downloaders and game owner were allowed, at random, the choice of 4 different characters. Something like this could work.

I'd prefer full roster, but that sounds fun. It be much more interesting to play the game randomly than a lame cheap multiplayer minigame. (Need I mention Kirby Sqeak Squad?)

They could always go the Bleach DS route and have all the characters and stages that the host unlocked available. But as said before, that wouldn't be very good on a business level. I think that 20 characters and 10 stages (all starter) should be good enough.

It's not about money! Smash Bros. is just too big a game to be able to be used over download play. And if it only had like 1 stage and like 4 characters, what would even be the point?

The point would be to get your friends to buy it. For example, I'm getting it on release and my friend isnt. So the day after that I go to him, he grabs his 3DS and we do a couple of matches. He is limited to maybe 3 characters, or the mii fighters, while I have the full roster. We're limited to Battlefield. We do some quick matches, and he decides to buy the game. It's a win win situation.

If they did, I think it would probably a small amount of stages, 2-5 minute brawl, but with all characters. That would hopefully get people interested without dashing hopes or people who use download play.

That's only if it is included.

I can just see it being just battlefield and the only characters available would be Mario, Fox, and Samus or Link. Even thoughn its not much it. The fact that you r playing SMASH FOR FREE is alright with me

If download play is indeed available, I can only see final destination, no items, and fox only as the only option.:fdb::4fox::shaker:

I see how this seems like a good strategy, but then reviewers and all will no doubt comment on the game's terrible Download Play option, adding in a negative that doesn't have to exist if it just isn't there. Most people don't need a mini demo to know they want the game. You could always just let them try your copy.

Street Fighter IV only allowed Ryu vs. Ryu mirror matches on the Training Stage. You couldn't choose your own character either because that means your character's data would have to be constantly streamed, causing lag.

I think it'll be something similar if it's there at all.

While I could see it limiting the roster, I think limiting it to a single character rather defeats the purpose of a crossover fighting game. At least limiting it to something like the Original Eight would give players some diversity.
Stages could be limited, though, to cut down on download size. It's hard to really limit the characters, though, as unless the game streams (which would be a pain on wireless), it'll have to download the data for any character the cart owner could select.

I, at least, would be willing to wait around a bit so my friends could join me (all... one of them that won't be getting the game).

Seeing how Mario Kart has DS download, no doubt for me we'll have it for smash. As for characters for those DS downloading, either:
1. Starter characters.
2. Mii Fighters.

You can avoid that issue by having one person with the game host using the single card option and the other person with the game choose the multicard option instead of using dowload play and the person without the game just uses the download play option as usual. I've only done this with MPH but I would assume it would work for other games.

I really doubt it'll have download play. But if it did, I could see it offering some core characters like Mario, Link, Samus, and DK as well as some newer choices like WFT, Greninja, and Rosalina. I don't think it would limit stage, item, or rule selection though.

Honestly the loading times would be horrible anyway, as I've seen with Mario Kart 7 if you play a different stage everytime.
It will be the Mii character stored as the main Mii on the 3DS and being able to choose 3 options of standard brawler swordfighter and gunner on Battlefield at the most, the music and everything is just way too much data to transfer over for all stages.
