I'm curious on how doubles are different from singles in SSB. Mainly SM4SH, but if there are any other general guides I'd be interested in reading them. What are some general strategies for doubles, and what characters are best? How does it differ from singles? I'm interested in getting into it.

Thanks

It differs combo-wise in the aspect that there's more possibilities with a partner. It's also different because it displays good or bad teamwork strategy.

In doubles both players have to work together to combat other players. Lots of things are different because there is little to no "Neutral" game. You can't read a shield and go for a grab because their teammate, if they are smart, will throw out a hitbox. It's the fact you can always throw out both Paper and Scissors to win it that destroys the Neutral. Doubles is more combo based as someone can pick up when you go into endlag.

Not to mention, combinations of characters will make a huge difference, since you might find a combination that works really well due to syncing.

In doubles, there's a lot more to worry about and you need a lot better reactions. In singles, there's less to worry about because it's all right in front of you, but, you need to have a better mindgame and punish game. This is how I understand it.

Thank you for your reply. One more question i forgot to ask. what is the purpose of team attack being on?

When team attack is off Doubles is almost entirely about damage and nothing else. With it on, there's a lot more depth to it because now you can't just throw out a NAir with Falcon and think "This'll hit someone" Because it may also hit your teammate. It also means that it takes more skill to be a good doubles team because you and your partner must know each other well enough to know when one will go for a kill move, so that you can avoid the hitbox. Stuff like that.

Doubles is more fun, in my opinion. There's a certain level of satisfaction that comes from working together with a teammate (of course, that's largely irrelevant if you just pick a player you've never teamed before with) that just isn't present in a singles match. It can also lead to more interesting and unique strategies, though it does sometimes result in certain character combinations becoming unfavorable.

And of course, Friendly Fire or not also heavily influences what works. I recommend sticking it on if you plan on doing doubles tournaments, since that's standard. But if you're just going to be on For Glory, go with what you want.
