When you're first learning it, yeah it's pretty hard. Idk the frames, but you need to be pinpoint about your speed if you wanna pull these off.

Press jump then press b twice. Kinda all there is to it. Just do it really fast.

For me, I have to slide between Y and B. The slide motion is easiest for me (also helps me with my double shines). On some occasions when I have been super warmed up and/or playing really fast that day, I can do it by just normal pressing X (or Y) and B.

Some people do it by flicking up on the control stick for the short hop.

Main thing though is to jump then press B twice. Don't matter the actual technique on how you do it. If you can do that motion fast enough, then you'll double laser.

Edit: The thing that makes it hard is that you want to fire both lasers quickly enough so that the first (high) laser hits your opponent; the point to double lasers is to hit with both lasers. If you do it slow, then the high laser will be too high and it'll fly over your opponent. If you do it TOO too slow, you will only get one laser.

so by your edit, you mean that you are supposed to hit your opponent once on the way up, and once coming down from the jump?

Also, would you suggest I use y to short hop? cause its hard to short hop with x and have time to get your fingers down to do one laser, let alone two

Whenever I learned to SHDL, I used the control stick to short hop and just started shooting as soon as I jumped.

But then some ****** broke my controller so now I have one whose sensitivity on the northern side of the stick is terrible and won't let me SH

So I haven't even tried to do it since then. Seems really annoying to do with Y.

Currently having some trouble nailing the SHDL. I can get the button timing for Falco's LHDL and Fox's FHDL (sliding finger), but getting being delicate enough to do SHDL's consistently is going to take more than like two minutes lol. Working at it now, if I discover anything moderately helpful I'll post here. I refuse to attempt the control stick method first, I'll work at Y>B instead.

EDIT: Also going to experiment with doing SHDL's with a claw to see how it compares.

This is janky as hell and I probably won't ever actually do it in a match.
But you CAN hold L, buffer a SH with the c-stick (this is conducive to performing more frame perfect jumps) and tap B twice.

Hold L with left index finger, move c-stick upwards to B and push it twice with your thumb. It kills all of the time lost between moving from X/Y to B.

Probably isn't good. But it's easy.

This is most likely nonsense but it's something I thought about when I couldn't sleep and it works. Lolz

edit:
don't do this LOL

yea i can double lazer like a SHL spamming falco but i believe it is important to spam fox blaster cuz it racks up free % and it keeps you moving so you don't go stale.
I need to keep the flow of my movements flowing with da blaster. also fox looks cool wen pivot lazer

i thought you had to fast fall the dubs but im ********

I just use Y to jump for SHDL with Fox, but X for every other character (and actually, everything else with Fox too). Had been jumping with X for years and changing to Y just felt strange, yet it's juuust a bit closer to B which is enough to make a difference for this.

But yeah, it's kind of tricky at first and your thumb has to be quick.

Eh, yeah I think that's right. The laser needs to come out as you're coming up...or something like that. Basically, you shouldn't be firing the laser at the height of your jump, as then you won't have both lasers come out in time (the time for Fox to put away the gun would be too long; you'll hit the ground before the second will come out...I think).

Tl'dr: Yeah, that's right. Laser as you're going up; too slow and either only one laser comes out, or both lasers come out, but you're gonna miss with the top laser.

Yeah I pity fools who learned to play smash using X to jump
It hurts man...it hurts to use X. Makes me *just* slow enough, that I can't execute the moves I want correctly. T-T

*Goes back to training mode*

lol...jank as fuq, but knowledge is knowledge. I lose nothing for knowing this. :3

I agree to a degree. I used to be more on-point with my lasers. Then I stopped using them, because it slowly became less necessary, as the metagame evolved.

But yeah, sometimes because there are games where both you and your opponent space like for 30 seconds, the lasers help make it less dead time. Only thing is, since I hardly use it much these days, I'm...much rustier now. Haha
