Whats more efficient, double jump waveland onto platforms or just a single jump into waveland?

Also, for both jumps, do you ascend at the same speed or is the 2nd jump faster?

There is no universal answer other than some characters are stage dependent. For example, Samus and Sheik's SH can reach the lower platform on YI without need for waveland. While Falcon can FH backwards to reach the top platform of YI. However, in most cases for characters and stages its FH -> waveland gets you the fastest speed. I never know of a situation to double jump -> waveland to a lower platform.

As for speed, yes, there are some differences for characters about 2nd jump or FH being faster. The best example I can think of is Peach. Her double jump simply does not reach the same height as her FH does for its speed. 2nd jump is much slower.

I don't know exactly how jumps work. The main thing I wonder about is how gravity is applied - is a jump basically a big jolt in speed that slows down over time due to gravity, or it is kind of like a hard-coded distance and speed?

I find that using the double jump is faster than not. I'm not sure if it's actually the case, though. My reasoning is that upward speed slows down over time (as though gravity were affecting it) and double jumping resets your speed (depending on your character's double jump).
