are the characters on the dojo going to be starters? Because from what iv'e heard for about ssbm was that the unlockables were released after the games release. (not to sure)

Using the internet wayback machine, I looked at January 2002, and from what I could see, I didn't see any hidden characters even a month after the game's release.
That link is too old to contain the link to the Flash part of the site that contained the updates.
IF the Box-art that's being waved around is true (might have been confirmed at E for All? Not sure) then yeah, it'd be a safe bet they're the starters. (The ones on the box art anyway) Generally don't have hidden characters on Box Art. (Sonic and Snake would be the exception, Sakurai said he felt they should be unlockable.)
As for the rest, the jury's still out.
