Apparently, I roll enough to open up my own bakery :X What are some options for newer players to learn that accomplish the same things as rolling, but are stronger in terms of safety and read-ability? I find myself using them A LOT, and getting chased down by players who are better than me.

Wavedash out of shield, and in general, just try to be in your shield less.

What's nice about WD OoS is that if you do get hit, there's a good chance you'll crouch cancel it.

Who do you main?
There are a variety of things you can do out of shield depending on which character you're using.
In general though, wavedashing, or even just jumping out of shield is a good option.
Rolling isn't that bad as long as you do it moderation, and don't become predictable with it.

My biggest problem with wavedashing is that I always seem to get smacked in the frames that you can't do anything ~_~ Any advice?

Edit:Ninja'd! I main marth :)

Make sure you're letting go of the shield button before you do your wavedash out of shield, or else you'll just spot dodge.
If you're having trouble wavedashing in general, practice is all you can really do. Practice makes perfect.
Also, if you main Marth, wavedash out of shield is going to be your best friend.
It's a great way to get out of shield pressure and to re-establish your spacing.

Nono, the act of wave dashing, I'm very comfortable with. However, when you wavedash, there are frames where you can't input anything(including shield) and are able to be hit, and I always seem to get hit during those frames :/

But yeah Wavedash OoS I've been told is a great tool

It sounds like you're wavedashing predictably and getting punished. If you do anything predictably, you will get punished.
and just please, don't roll unless its your only option; it is almost never your only option. WD OoS is better 99.99% of the time. Jump OoS is usually better. Shield grab (while nooby) is sometimes better than doing a roll, if properly timed. Try light shielding so you get pushed farther away.

Ohhhhh, I understand now. It's best to wait until after your opponent does a laggy move against your shield, that way you have enough time to wavedash out safely.

Alright. So I should practice shielding opponent's pressure, wavedashing out, and then hopefully be + frames, then pressure them?

Doing enough rolls to open up ones own bakery is a great expression <3

The thing about doing anything against shield pressure is knowing when it's usually safe to leave your shield and then mixing up what you're doing. E.g. against CF can't legitimately connect with anything after his jabs, so if you think he's going to stop his jab sequence that's your cue to do stuff.
And yeah, most rolls can be substituted by well-timed wavedashes. The wavedash will leave you safer afterwards, but you can roll out of some things where you can't start up a wavedash before getting hit (and rolls are super easy to time, since you can buffern them with the c stick).
Always remember: You're not a noob for rolling, you're just a noob if you get punished for it.
