Wow, what's the point of it then? Why not give out a free blue or red smash 3DS xl and/or a free copy of the game? At least theme don't have to win and use ur money.

Assuming you're talking about the 3DS tournament, please refer to this link. It is by no means "just bragging rights".

A copypaste of the Prizing section:

  • Prizing
    • Each Local Tournament winner will receive
      • a Nintendo 3DS XL system (ARV $200);
    • a Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS game ($40);
    • two (2) round-trip coach class airline tickets from a major U.S. commercial airport near the winner’s home to the metro New York area for winner and a guest (the “Travel Guest”) (however, at Nintendo’s discretion, if the winner lives within reasonable driving distance of New York City, he or she may receive round-trip ground transportation to New York City in lieu of the airline tickets) (ARV $1,450);
    • two (2) nights’ lodging in a hotel chosen by Nintendo in the New York metropolitan area for winner and the Travel Guest (one standard room, double occupancy) (however, at Nintendo’s discretion, if the winner lives in the New York City metro area, he or she may receive round-trip ground transportation to the National Tournament in lieu of the hotel accommodations) (ARV $800); and
    • one (1) Visa gift card for $250 (ARV $250).
    • The National Tournament winner will receive
      • A Super Smash Bros. champion’s robe (ARV $100); and
      • A champion’s trophy (ARV $900).
    • Total ARV of all available prizes: $44,840. Additional details regarding prizing are set forth in Section 5 below.
So, no, it's not like the E3 tournament (which was basically a hype driver and publicity stunt). This is a real, if very Nintendo-ruled, tournament.

Why would Nintendo allow items and no stock yet For Glory mode has 2 Stock 5 minutes which is what most tournament hosts are probably gonna use as the default for rounds. They must have known something, but then they tossed it out the window.

Hope canadian players "defining" the rules will set Nintendo straight in the future.

But Bowser Strength Buff and Defense buff LFG.

It's really bugging me but how does that add up to $44,840 or am I blind?

Total prizes. In other words, the sum value of the 3DSes plus games they're giving out across the country, plus the other things, is about $44840. The total prize for a single total winner is 1450 (travel) +240 (3DS and game) +800 (lodging) +250 (gift card) + 100 (robe) + 900 (trophy), or $3740. That's strictly going by their estimated Approximate Retail Values (ARV). The other 41k is made up of all of the players who don't win in the big tourney, but win the locals.

Awesome! *goes to check tourney locations*... closest one for me is an hour away... BY CAR! WHY ME!?
I don't even have a car QnQ... and I doubt anyone would drive me... and if they did drive me I'd feel guilty if I lost... why does my town have to be so small it's not on the map!?

Find someone who also wants to go and join them. You might have to pay for gas money or something, but you make a new smash friend and a chance at the tourney title.

I'm like the only smash fan in my area (bar my brothers who are in the same situation with me)... sure the people here PLAY smash, but I wouldn't call them fans...

I know that feeling. At least you're only an hour away, it would take me about five to reach the closest. Which is in the mountains. And I get motion sick...

But yeah. It's a cool tourney and all, just wish it were more widespread and stuff. You'd think the one in NC would be somewhere besides a small university town in the mountains.
