That's a pretty good question. I'm no expert and I've never played in tournaments before, so I might not be very accurate. Since Sheik is pretty fast already and since her moves are barely laggy, you don't REALLY NEED to use shffl's without having her get destroyed. My sister is still pretty formidable without using advanced techniques. It couldn't hurt to learn to shffl though, because it really speeds up your game and makes you less vulnerable and makes Sheik twice as strong. My rule of thumb is to learn how to shffl with your best character. I know I SHFFL with Sheik. Eventually, you'll be able to SHFFL with almost all characters. But overall, if you can "WD techs and edge techs and stuff?" then you should be fine. Link on the other hand...REALLY NEEDS SHFFL's to survive.

To be honest, noone needs any of the advanced tactics to play on a high level, but one who uses them will only improve their game, because there is no downside to using shffl with sheik, only an increase in speed. With Sheik I hardly shffl since my game mostly relies on the ground, but when I do go aerial, I usually use bair-Djcbair, turn fair, then shffl and wait, since it usually knocks off the edge.

Man, this makes me feel like a moron. Shiek is my main character, yet she's about the only character that I can't short-hop with (as in, barely leave the ground). I try to keep Y pressed down as little as possible, yet she still ends up doing a jump that is about her own height. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

It's not about how far down you press the jump button, it's about how fast. You can jam it all the way in, but as long as you do it quickly, you'll still short hop.

That's what I meant: I press and release as fast I can. I don't think my fingers are slow, because I can SH with almost any other character.

Sheik short hops about an... Inch or so lower than the full jump. It's also really difficult to do Sheik's short hop when compared to other characters. Pretty sure it's the hardest short hop to pull off in the game. Short hopping with Sheik can be optional, probably.

I have a harder time pulling off Samus' short hop than anybody else's. I find Sheik's SH very useful, mostly because it allows me to get back on the ground and back to comboing quicker.

All in all, SHFFLing with Sheik is pretty **** useful, especially when your opponent shields your incoming FAir and proceeds to shield grab you. Even though Sheik is already fast in terms of recovery, the slightest increase in speed can help you win the match. Why wouldn't you take the time to master something that could only make your Sheik faster and your game better?

SHFFL for sheik, basically only for a shield cancell'd dair, that's the only air move that must be SHFFL'd, but really she doesn't need it, she's ghey enough

SHFFLing for Sheik can be difficult to incorporate sometimes, but every once in awhile it has its moment. Obviously you want to be prepared for anything, even if that means practicing a technique just for a rare occasion.
If you dont want to just practice SHFFLing, get better at l-canceling and short-hopping individually, then adding the together won't be such a hassle.
my advice is just work on everything possible technique that you can accomplish.

Yes, learn to shffl, like one of the other guys said, you won't be the best if you're too lazy to accomplish all of the character's feats. You can obviously skip out on the lesser important things, like the shino edgestall, but regardless, in some odd situation, you'll need the characters weird tweeks and glitches and you'll be happy you knew them. ;)

uhh, its been in my experience that the shino stall is very important. definitely do one or two of them to force someone away from the edge when your recovering. then, waveland back on and your back in the game. So, don't overlook that one. it can be a lifesaver.
