Does anyone know the technical details of how leafshield works?

Getting so frustrated over leafshield
I use it in matches and sometimes it works and sometimes it just does absolutely nothing
It seems to be completely random
The leaves are clearly zero indication of a hitbox, which is really stupid because if the leaves dont have a hitbox then what does?
I have been to training mode and slowed the speed down to .25 and still am unable to really figure out how exactly it works
Are the hitboxes actually random? Does it block projectiles at random?
Seems to also do a lot of nothing in the air 90% of the time, which is very strange

If anyone has any technical data please let me know

Well most of the time its gonna be used as a tool to get grabs, scare enemies (dont throw it too much its best when it surrounds megaman) and for gimps
