I honestly have no idea if this has an official name, but it's what happened when you dodge just before hitting the ground in order to prevent lag from simply hitting the floor. Not sure what it's called, but I know it's a commonly known thing.

Anyway, I wanted to know whether such a thing was even viable in a competitive environment, mainly because from all high-level play I have seen, I haven't seen anyone use it, as typically they go for recovering in the air and utilising air-dodges or attacks on the way back down.

Also, I wanted to know how viable it might be for the sake of cancelling spikes. I remember at one point, while at 100% or so, I managed to prevent being killed by a meteor attack (I honestly can't remember who by) by somehow using this at the right time. I haven't been able to replicate it since, as I assumed it was mainly a miss timed air-dodge, but I do know that if it hadn't have happened, I would have lost the stock.

It's called teching, yes it's great and you can get out of spikes with it sometimes. Obviously don't be too predictable with it, mix up teching away/into/in place

It's best out of hitstun when you couldn't simply land and shield/dodge/do a move

You'll just have to look for some guides or videos about teching in smash. It's been around for a while and acts similarly in the games.

Ah, I see. I thought Teching was a broader term for specific mechanics in the game that are more prominent on a competitive level.

Thanks for the info!

No those would be techs(short for techniques or advanced techniques) for sure one of the more confusing things about smash terms

Edit: oh wait I think i see what you're saying. In other fighting games I believe that is the definition and there are grab techs and stuff(maybe??) but in smash this is the only type of teching, FYI it also will save you from stage spikes(see ally vs m2k Alex 2010)

The official term is "ukemi." In English it is referred officially as a "breakfall."
When a blow sends you flying, tap the shield button just before you come into contact with the ground, wall, or ceiling. You’ll bound off the surface with a little hop and, like a judo master, cancel any excess momentum that would have otherwise kept you careening around wildly.
