Sakurai knows the Melee community is loud and loves Melee, so its potentially a cash cow for Nintendo. Considering its one of Nintendo's greatest and most popular games, I could see them releasing a new edition on the Wii U, which also has the gamecube controller support now.

I think if they did release a 15 year anniversary edition, they won't remove any of the glitches since that's what has kept the game's popularity up to this day. Hopefully they would add some new features and costumes for characters. Maybe they could go back and balance out character's moves a bit more.

I would definitely purchase a Wii U version since we could play it on HDTVs. I think we just need to stop lugging around CRTs now, though I hate the lag associated with HDTVs too. Some HDTVs and monitors are much better than others when it comes to the lag.

I want to hear your opinions on this possibility. Even if this isn't a possibility, maybe the forum can give this some traction on the internetz, haha.

I would only buy it if it has online because I don't want to pay $60 for a game I already have. Also, I don't have an HDTV I use for gaming.

Nintendo would never touch Melee again.

And if they did, they would butcher it. I'm content to let the original game be what it is.

Hopefully it's a virtual console release. We've seen that Mario Kart 8 hasn't stopped them from putting out the SNES and GBA versions and GC games are being considered for the future.

If they re-released Melee they would start patching it and everyone would freak out and hate it. Then they would just play the old Melee anyways. I don't see any hope for a Melee remake. It would be cool though.

Sakurai already gets constant criticism for DLC, whether he includes more or not to the unreleased Smash 4 for the WiiU.

I don't think he would consider releasing a new edition of melee. Most LCD TVs have input lag on them, which is quite noticeable for hardcore gamers. Considering most avid melee fans play competitively, there would be a lot of negative feedback about that alone.

Another factor in play here is if he updates the gameplay at all. Once again, any change(or lack of change) in the said edition would be criticized.

People become very nit-picky when it comes to a change in gameplay. I don't blame the gamers or the game-makers for their ultimate decisions, but feedback will always be a major aspect of future releases.

I would want a HD Remake of Melee where everything is the same + a mode with better balance (just make the weaker characters strong), as well as consistent frame rates on all stages, Battlefield with fixed edges, and maybe all the 64 stages (including Metal Caverns, plz), but honestly, Nintendo won't do that.

Instead, if they remake Melee they will find a way to butcher it.

With the Metroid Prime Trilogy collection they took out most of the insane exploits that speed runners would do. I assume in a Melee HD remake they would take out pretty much every advanced technique, neuter the game, and use the PAL version of Melee, all of which IMO are terrible moves.

Hopefully Melee does come to the Virtual Console in the future (so it can work on HDTV's without lag and we can stop bringing in our massive TV's), and it contains every NTSC-U&J version+PAL release of the game.
