Do Video Game Conventions have good tournaments ?

I want to get started in Competitive Smash but I am Under 18 so it has to be in my area, PAX East will be the closest thing available and my parents only feel safe with big events like PAX, are Smash Tournaments there any good ?

From my limited experience with cons (Otakon, MAGFest, Katsucon), con tournaments are about the scrubbiest tournaments you can find. They are absolutely nothing like the real thing.
