Do TO's normally participate in their tourneys?

Hi. I've been thinking of hosting a tourney after an acquaintance of mine stopped hosting his. I wanted to do something to succeed his, so to speak. I'm still new to tournaments though, so my question probably comes off as scrubby since I haven't seen a thread about this.

I read somewhere that TO's shouldn't be and don't play in their own tournaments. Is this true? The last guy who hosted them in my area actually did participate in his own tourney, so I was just wondering.

Depends on the TO. Some don't cause they want to focus on running the tournament. But some do. Why? To have fun :D.

We (Evansville Esports in IN) run tournaments with the gamers in the area working with us. We let our TO's participate as long as they feel they can do so and still run their game smoothly. So far everyone that has TO'ed for us is also in the tournament, several in more than one game. Usually everything still goes pretty smoothly. But the bigger the event, the harder it gets. So small tournies, sure. If you're looking to organize several hundred people though, you may need TO's that are dedicated to only running it and not participating.

It really depends on the person, most don't to focus on running the tourney, but if it's not above 32 players, it's easily possible. Although, if there are two TOs, they can both participate without a problem.

I think ideally it shouldn't happen, but then you have cases like with Armada and BEAST.

When I held tournaments for Smash Brawl a few years ago I hosted them with intent not to participate in it. Out of fear of offending other players participating. Though, they encouraged me to participate because of the amount of people we had to help assist me in running it at the venue and for better competition. Needless to say, we had a pretty good turnout both competition and player numbers wise.
