I am sure that it is a debate that has been had many a time on the Smashboards but from what I can tell... Never in the Debate Hall but I would like to here your opinions.

To those that don't know (Tires= Tiers, and Exits= Exist)

I personally believe that they do exist. When you have an assortment of characters with different fighting styles, weights, heights, et cetera there is no way for the game to be 100 percent balanced.

However the weight of tiers on game play I am not sure of. I have lost to people playing low tier characters before and I doubt that tiers play that big of a role in the series.

However since it appears that all technical skill that was in Melee was taken out maybe the actual power of the characters will be more important.

****, you beat me to the correction :)

Anyways, yes tiers exist, for two reasons. One, some characters are simply going to stand a better/worse chance at winning tournaments. Two, the characters can never be truly balanced, no matter how much work the designers put into the game, some characters will simply be better than others.

This isn't to say that player skill doesn't play a part, it does. A good player can still own as a lower tier character. But tiers still exist, even if the community doesn't create them. Theyre just a part of the game. Thats why if you sit kids who have no idea about a competitive scene, they will still be able to say "thats the best/worst character in the game".

I don't think you're going to get an intelligent person to say that tiers don't exist. In fact the entire "tires don exits" saying is generally used to mock the intelligence of those who believe otherwise.

A much more interesting question is whether playing to win in its strictest form means choosing the highest tier character (or the character you perceive to be highest tier).

Which is the main reason I decided to make this thread, I know there are tiers, but what I don't know how much of an impact they will have in the upcoming Brawl competitive scene.
